Default Shipping goods to NZ

To all the people who have taken household effects to NZ can you help me pls. When shipping household goods, what sort of listing do you need to give Customs? would it read Box 1 contains books or Box one contains 25 books and their titles are....???
Its a bit early for us to be asking but our stuff is imminently going into storage and I need to get some sort of listing done now.
I can't find anything on NZIS or the customs sites but I may have missed something.
Anyone help???
Pat.

If you use a removals company they do all that (we had an inventory that was
8 pages long!) It is woth paying the £3000 (22ft container, average 3 bed
house) or so to have the job done IMHO. It is one less stress and it frees
your time. A container costs about US$10 per day to rent, so if you work it
out thats around $560 US, the land shipping a couple of hundred £ and the
see freight £1000 or so. The guys who did us spent 3 days packing and used
about 2 rolls of bubble wrap, 100 boxes, etc - these would have bee another
cost, as well as the time. At the other end the unpacking and building of
beds, etc was a big help.

Thanks Ian,
The problem is that we have sold the house and will complete on 25-10. As we are not due to leave before about mid Jan, our goods will have to go into storage whilst we stay with his mother. I can't see the point of packing for storage then having them re-pack hence my question about manifest.
For some strange reason, I can't seem to find this out anywhere.
Pat.

Sorry, perhaps I should also have added that we are selling/dumping most of the big items so we will have only boxes of books and ornaments, curtains etc etc.

The example I was given by a shipping company has it as quantity and item
without needing to go into specifics such as title, e.g.,
25 books,
3 pairs shoes,
6 shirts, etc.

If you want details feel free to contact me off line.

Ben

The moving company will give you a copy of the inventory.
Do **not** sign it until you have done a final walk-through and
established **everything** has been packed and inventoried.

If you have a moving company packing you who has another company in NZ
picking up the container/delivering it to you, they will either have
had faxed to them by your movers, or, will obtain from you, a copy of
the inventory which they will submit to Customs along with a
declaration you have signed.

They should also give you a document for MAF declaration.

If your doing it yourself, it is easy to do.

You need to establish before you pack anything with the moving company
or directly with whoever your load is being insured with as to what
they require for insurance purposes. Generally, if items are
grouped, in the event of a loss, it is pro-rated. Now is a good time
to sit down and list down **every** album, book, etc.

Some moving companies will give you boxes to pack non-breakables such
as books if you want to do this. Ensure you have a good line of
communication with the co-ordinator handling your move.

Cath thanks - terribly helpful. Its all turning into a complicated headache but then noone said it was going to be easy! I'm not looking forward to re-opening 50 boxes of books, taking them out, putting them back in and re-sealing but if needs must I guess. Thanks goodness we've dumped the worst tat!
Pat.
