Default Shipping company increasing their original quote price

Hi there,

We decide to use Doree Bonner as our shipping agent and they quoted us £3410 to ship a 20 foot container to Sydney 6 weeks ago. They put our goods into storage 4 weeks ago and we have just given them the go ahead to ship everything from storage to Australia. They are now saying that they are going to charge us £370 more because the cost of shipping the container has gone up as the GBP to USD rate has fallen and they are charged in USD. I was horrified to hear this as nobody had made us aware they could do this and they are saying that it is in the terms and conditions.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,
Vanita

If they say they are in the T&C's then grab your contract and read all of the small print - if it does state they then can increase the cost due to rate fluctuation then not much you can do but if it doesn't then I'd start arguing - and make sure its in the T&C's they gave you originally not something they send to you now.

Best of luck, Louise

You're a bit stuck when they are holding your stuff.

We managed to get them to reduce the quote through negotiation, but that was before they had our stuff. Not sure if it really helps, but we were very pleased with the service they provided.

Good luck.

Sorry to say but I fully agree with Louise. :curse: If it is in their T&C's than you can't do much. By they way, most of moving companies around the world have this clause in their T&C's because of unstaible world economy. They don't want to loose their profit because of currency exchange losses ... but may it is worthwile to negotiate with them ...

And don't be too upset ... it is a typical beginner mistake when you deal with movers the first time.

Cheers
Frank
