Default Shipping cars

We finally got our car back following our accident after almost 6 weeks.
It looks spanking gorgeous though now which has got me thinking?

How much hassle would it be to ship over?

Over here i reckon it would be worth around 4k if we are lucky, and trying to sell quickly probably less.

Its a saab 93 diesel and has 70000 miles on it in excellent condition?

I have heard horror stories regarding importing cars but I wondered what people thoughts were?

Any advice would appreciated thanks

We're in the process of doing it. In all reality it's going to cost us in the region ten thousand pounds. However, for our car (a classic, limited edition one) we consider the cost worth it. For a bog basic car, I wouldn't bother.

DO a search for bigApe's thread. It's very useful.

Also bear in mind you will need australian compliance for any car after a certain year of manufacture, this is an added cost and can be upto as much as the shipping cost.

Anything worth less than 20,000 GBP I wouldn't bother....Unless it has sentimental value that makes the cost irrelevant.

Also as for the limited edition car mentioned above, you do find many cars available in Australia due to better weather are available but cheaper than the european counterpart. For instance an Escort RS2000 would be available for 5 to $10,000 here, try and do the same in sterling, likewise for other models.

Basically before you ship research thoroughly , shipping costs, compliance costs, availability of the same car in Australia, the cost of parts and maintenence whilst in Australia. I have to import parts for mine and it isn't cheap.

If anything goes wrong with it, you may have to go to the Saab dealer for parts [even though it's a GM car] which means $$$$$ and a delay if the part has to come to Europe.

Unless it's a classic car - don't bother.

It's one of 25 made, never sold in Australia, so we're keen to hold onto her. The basic model that it's based on is $130k in Australia. Even with shipping and import tax and stuff, we're cheaper bringing her over.

You will have to contend with Shipping fees, Quarantine Entry fees, Customs Entry fees, Air Conditioning fees, AQIS Quarantine fees, Local shipping fees, Customs Levied Entry fees and that's before you get hit with import tax, duty, federal and state compliance costs and on-road costs.

Have a read of this...

Importing Your Car to Australia

and if you still feel that you want to go ahead with it I'll give you a very rough estimate of the total cost of importing if you provide the following information.
  • Make
  • Model
  • Model Type
  • Body Type
  • Engine size
  • Transmission
  • Year of Manufacture
  • Mileage
  • Condition
  • What you believe the car is worth in the UK ?

So an example would be:
  • Make: Toyota
  • Model: Land Cruiser
  • Model Type: LC4
  • Body Type: 4 Door
  • Engine size: 2982cc
  • Transmission: Manual 4x4/4x2
  • Year of Manufacture: 2004
  • Mileage: 15,000m
  • Condition: Excellent
  • What you believe the car is worth ? £15,000. Usually £21,000 but the market is not good now

Be as specific as possible

Al
