shippers insurance..do we need it?
I am ringing the shippers today to arrange a date for all our stuff removing what I was wondering is do we really need insurance ... most of the stuff is sentimental tat that we wouldnt be able to replace anyway. Do they make you have the insurance, will they move you without it.
Does anyone know
Thanks

You don't have to have insurance - it's totally up to you.
I can understand if you don't have anything 'damageable' but also maybe consider that without insurance you won't be covered for anything at all in the unlikely event of total loss (e.g. ship sinks), so you'd have to replace everything in your shipment at your own expense.
I guess it boils down to whether you want to take the risk

I've just insured the more expensive, breakable items like PC, stereo, some glassware, etc. I didn't go for the option to add on my shipping costs.
Logic would dictate that if the ship sinks or container falls overboard then you would have a claim against the shipping company but I doubt they would agree!

I don't want to say anymore because I'm still waiting for the container to arrive so don't want to tempt fate.

Yes I thought to myself that would be the only reason the insurance was any good for... the entire load sinking into the sea... I guessed the actual policy would be so full of loop holes that if stuff just got a bit damaged you would not stand a chance of recovering much money anyway. Think I might shop around for insurance elsewhere for the whole load £300 sounds good.

We only insured certain items like leather sofas, if you were insuring ornaments etc you had to list them. I was told by the packer that the chance of losing a container overboard is really slim. The containers are airtight so if they go over they just float and they then pick it up with the crane. If we ever moved again I don't think we would take insurance.
If shippers are negligent there is nothing to stop you sueing, I am pretty sure that because they have offered insurance it does not mean they are untouchable under the law.
