Default Shipments for a PR Visa holder

Hi,

I have been granted PR (Skilled-Independant) to AUS and planning to be there in Feb 2010. I have fair amount of items I can not take (specially my Kids) on flight and have to consider shipping them. Is there any place/website I could get information about the limitations/benefits applied to a PR visa holder when it comes to sending a shipment to AUS?

Regards,
Uchitha.

You can ship all of your belonging to Australia. If you own guns you have to jump through hoops to get the right licences before sending them and you can't bring certain foods or untreated wood or any plant life but apart from that you're fine. As for benefits, well some people want their own possessions around them and some have possessions that are valuable enough not to leave behind. Others are happy to sell or dump everything other than a couple of boxes of photos, music, clothing etc and start again afresh when they get here.

Thank you! What are the taxes involved when releasing my stuff back in Aus? Do I get any tax benefits due to the fact that I'm a PR visa holder?

No. You just bring your stuff in and get on with life. They do have a rule that if any of the items you bring in are less than 12 months old they require proof of purchase so they can charge you GST. The fact is they are only interested if you are bringing in 20 TVs or lots of brand new stuff that would obviously be for resale. A brand new vacuum or TV etc they are not interested in so don't worry about it.

No tax benefits on arrival for being a PR. Only benefit you'll get is with your first tax return in July, because you'll have worked less than a full year you seem to get a good refund but it's no more than anyone else would get.

You've got your PR, that's all the benefit you're getting
