Are you bringing them back again, or a one way shipment ? Motorbikes are cheaper in UK than they are here, it may be more cost effective to buy similar models there and then sell them again after the trip to get your cash back.

You will need to organise a Carnet with customs so that your bikes don't attract import duty at either/both ends. It's like a temporary passport for your bikes.
Shipping them in a shared container would be the most cost effective way to transporting them, expect to take about 7-10 weeks each way from drop off to pick up though. I imagine there wont be much change out of $1500 each way.
Hiring or buying/selling might be your better option. Are there no bike clubs over there that do exchange / swap schemes ? That might be worth looking at.

The bikes will probably need to be crated, drained of petrol and oil, which will add to the cost.
The batteries can just be disconnected usually.
If you can find someone to hold the crates for the return trip that would help.
Usually the front wheel and mudguard will be removed.
You should be OK riding on current Australian plates under the temporary import rule.
As already mentioned it may be more cost effective to buy and resell in the UK.
Try contacting a dealer, the only issue could be if you are planning to do it this year you will be selling at the end of the riding season and the 2016 models will be discounted to make way for the 2017s.
