Sharp rise in people leaving Australia?

Re: Sharp rise in people leaving Australia?
If you look at USA, Houston for instance, you can buy a fantastic house for around 150K (Oz at leat 800K for the same house) and shopping and other costs of living are not even one third of the costs in Australia. And the money you can earn is similar to what you can in Oz. So why stay here, in USA you'll get more space for less money.

Yeah, but you'd be living in Houston FFS! Sydney isn't the bright shining centre of the universe that it would have you believe, but Houston? Seriously?

Oh, I had forgotten that London = UK. Though, I'm not entirely sure if I recall even mentioning the UK - I can think of many many much smaller places all over the world that are more dynamic than Sydney...

It's common knowledge there are a few factors causing people to return home. The strong aussie dollar and high house prices make it tempting for people to sell up and return home.
LAFHA stopping is causing many people to think about leaving also.
Early last year a friend left Australia. He had to cancel his visa via DIAC so he could get hold of his pension. He emailed them and had everything he needed the next day.
Jump forwards to now and I have just been through this process and it took 4 weeks! The auto emails said they were very busy and responding to requests sent on the 1st August (I sent my email off on the 5th September and just heard back)!! Is it that bad!??
Speaking to people over in Australia there has been a sharp rise in people leaving and going home or just moving onto other places (HK, Singapore, etc).
I was quite shocked by the sheer numbers!!

Quite - who the hell wants to live in Texas? I've spent a little time in Texas and I know I couldn't live there. I couldn't give a monkeys of they gave houses away there. Plus the health insurance will put a nice dent in the money saved on the house.
