Sensible Family Car
Ok suggestions needed for the above.
6-10K AUD
So far it looks like Toyota Camry is a good choice for what I am looking for ie. reasonable price, reliability, space and comfort.
Not likely to be off road - in Sydney. Dont give a stuff about badge snobbery etc.
Any thoughts from those of you over there?

Ford Falcon or Holden equivalent of a Vauxhall Cavelier (not into cars do not know the names)
We bought a 5 year old Ford Falcon and kept it for another 4 years that we bought for 11K. Check you get a good bargain by checking the buyers guides and stick to them.
No snobbery attached to these cars - just holden vs ford jokes

Go for the Toyota camary
Toyota is highly regarded australia wide for excellent reliabillity
Also the camary is pretty big and would easily suit a family with 3 kids

Re: Sensible Family Car
And stay away from the crappy old Holdens and Fords. Aussies buy them because their parents and grandparents bought them (aussies do not like change) not because they are any good.
Toyota's, Nissan's and Mitsubishi's are all better and you can get a bargain because the aussies love their 'safe' locally made cars

I've got a Ford Falcon, I wouldn't recommend it though, reason being its slowly falling to bits, a supposedly good model as well in the 97EA Sapphire. The most annoying thing in my car owning life, was the roof lining collapsing (the lining coming away from the insulation) and me having to pull the stuff out on this Dinosaur of the roads. I'm not replacing it either, because it costs over 1,000 bucks for my station wagon. Currently the shockers are gone, the brakes have a dramatic wobble, the radiator has a pin hole (apparently) and can only be fixed with a replace, the gearbox needs a major service, the Air conditioner needs replacing as the bearings are gone and is likely to seize, this will probably stop the whole motor as it runs all of the one fan belt. So at least 3000 bucks worth of work, on a car where the trade in is only 2000 bucks.
I will admit the motor itself is perfect.
Hence the Toyota Camry is my recommendation, I'd prefer a Diesel Golf myself though. I may actually get one of these, probably the best value car on the road in Aus today could well be this....http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/Ar...rticleID=44035
I'm handicapped by a little rule to myself where I wont borrow money to buy a car.
Apologies didn't notice your 6-10k price range, Go with the Camry

Go for the Camry, my son has a 95 model and it's bloody great to drive. Better in fact than our 2006 Yaris. If you can get the CSX model it has cruise control and a few other bells and whistles

Re: Sensible Family Car
Yep, the sooner they start bringing more diesel cars over here the better. VW's are great cars but the aussies would rather buy 3.8 / 4.0 litre cars with no more power than a 2.0 Golf GTI and the Holdens / Fords handle like a soft blancmange as well because they are rear wheel drive (remember rear wheel drive cars in Europe - 20 years ago!!)
