Yes, I agree with this - the filter is certainly about much more than blocking inappropriate content - I think that Conroy's single minded obsession with it demonstrates that. Censorship and prevention of access to information is a dandy policy of any extreme government, be it right, left or religiously ideological - not just the socialists.

In this case, the beligerence of the government in the face of overwhelming evidence and criticism was one of the main reasons that I declined to vote for them. If they could be as single minded and obdurate on this issue, how would they be on others?

Thankfully the Greens did come to our rescue, and we still get the benefit of the NBN. Let's just hope that it doesn't turn into another Channel Tunnel. The suspicious side of me wonders if the filter wasn't more about putting in place a mechanism for preventing illegal downloading etc as a sweetener to get the content developers on side to use the NBN as a delivery system.
