Unregistered vehicles
An unregistered vehicle can be sold without a Certificate of Roadworthiness.
Seller’s responsibilities
•cancel vehicle registration, remove number plates and return them to VicRoads. Refunds on registration are available if you cancel registration before it expires and the registration was in your name.
Buyer’s responsibilities
•ask the seller for a receipt and keep this as proof of purchase and ownership
•get an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (if you want to drive the vehicle home)
•register the vehicle (if it will be used for driving on the roads), see: light vehicle registration.

take off the plates and hand them in.
if you have rego left, try to get a rebate, and otherwise just give the buyer a receipt with names, date, vin number etc, and that's pretty much all.

that applies for a vehicle that doesn't have a roadworthy, different to a statutory write off, although very similar. (you cant get an unregistered permit for a write off)

Then you hand the plates in etc as stated - it's all on the website.

Re: Selling a written off car in VIC
our car was written off 5 weeks ago (by a taxi driver who failed to see it parked outside our house!).
Vic roads said they get a notice from insurance co who advise if it is a repairable write off. (if it is not- don't progress any further- it will not be allowed back on the road).
The buyer has to provide documentation to show it is safe to be back on the road again and a roadworthy. But I think it will always be registered on the 'written off vehicles register'...just to make sure future buyers know what they are buying.
