Selling house from Aus!
Has anyone completed the sale of their house after they have settled in Australia. It looks as though we may have to do this, and we're not sure if we will need to give someone "power of attorney" to complete the sale on our behalf after we have emigrated.
Any help or advice would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Nanci

We're currently in the process of selling our house and we live in Melbourne now.
We used my partner's father as power of attorney for him and our solicitor as power of attorney for me (something to do with the law that we can't both have the same power of attorney as we aren't married).
So far we haven't had too many problems (apart from the messing around by the estate agent, but that's another story) and it all seems pretty straight forward. There is a proper power of attorney form that needs to be filled out though. We bought one off the internet and thought it would suffice, but the solicitor advised us that this wasn't the correct one to use and produced one specifically for selling houses (supposedly).
Our biggest niggle has been that we haven't had real control of what's happening as we let my partner's parents do all the talking. My advice is to still deal direct with the estate agent either by email or by phone just so you can keep in touch with wha'ts really going on.
Hope this helps.
Regards

Nanci, yes we did this too, agree with Jaykay, keep in contact wth agents/solicitors etc yourself, dont rely on someone else to do it for you. And yes, you will need a Power of Attorney, Dagboy used the solicitor.

I sold mine from here, and had a problem with the "Power of Attorney". It was the wrong one, and the sale papers ended up having to be sent over here for signature !!
If you can trust a solicitor, you can give them the power, and that makes things much easier. I did that the next time I needed something doing
I kept my UK bank account, so the proceeds were just paid to that bank as normal, and they then transferred it to my account in OZ. HSBC in both countries.

I sold my place in Bristol from abroad, no hassles at all, I gave the solicitor power of attorney to sign contract on my behalf. Then I had to sign and get witnessed the transfer (on completion) in person but just did that a couple of days in advance from abroad and couriered it back to the solicitor.
Money was in my a/c about an hour after completion (midday).

Thanks to everyone for all your help and advice. It certainly doesn't look as though our sale will complete before we leave, now we know what our options are.
Thanks again to all,
Nanci
