SELF SUFFICIENCY - WHAT GROWS IN YOUR GARDEN?
Is anyone partly or fully self sufficient in veggies and fruit? If so, where are you in Australia and what do you grow? Have you found any problems with pests that you are finding difficult to control, or have you found it very easy? Have you enough water? I would be grateful for any advice as we want to be an self sufficient as possible and haven't yet decided where to settle.

Yup. Growing very well, the husband gets very excited when he has some more figs to eat. The rest of us try not to vomit when he bites into them. Something weird happens to the leaves in autumn but don't know if it's just the colder weather or an insect but it all grows normally again so we don't worry about it.

We also grow lemons, oranges, tangerines, limes, plums, apples, tomatoes, beans, pumpkins and chilli peppers. And weeds.

Yup, pretty self sufficient in the summer time although we do have some winter vegies going now there isnt much growth. Dont have figs but we do have apples, pears, plumcots, plums apricots, strawberries. Growing in Canberra is a bit different because we do get nasty frosts. Water is from a tank that catches from the garage roof so not breaking any water usage regulations. Also have chooks so dont buy eggs either. It's DH's hobby not mine, I cant abide gardening.

Well all the citrus fruits in my garden tend to come with an added protein boost in the form of fruit fly maggots.

in the veggie plot tomatoes ( they grow so fast its unreal ) chinese cabbage, bok choi, rhubarb, watermelons, squash, zuchinni, pumpkins 2 types, peanuts ( must be the easyist plant to grow ever ) potatoes, spring onions, garlic, ginger ( another dead easy one )
planted but still growing macadamia nuts, olives, limes 2 types, lemons, necterines, cumquats, lychees, grapefruit & guava`s
thast andlot of grass that needs mowing once a week in the warmer months, no wonmder i dont ever seem to get any spare time
pest fruit fly especially soft fruits like the peaches keep the area spayed, you can a spray that goes on the grass around the trees thats really sweet smelling it attracts the flys and kills them before they get to the fruits ( alledgedly ) carnt decide if we were just too slow to start spraying but all the peaches were binned ( about 200 plus ) as full of maggots
had a huge crop of mangoes this year so did just about everyone as the conditions were perfect didnt spray with anything other than a fungacide as they can be prevelant to getting a black fungus on the flowerheads that prevents the fruits from setting
good luck with whatever you grow
regards steve

Re: SELF SUFFICIENCY - WHAT GROWS IN YOUR GARDEN?
I am in a rental, so can't be as sufficient as I would like.
I have trees in pots. Limes, lemons, oranges (two types), lemonade fruit (yum), figs, apples, pears. Herbs etc.
I would love to set up a hydroponics system and grow more actual veggies.
The only pests I have had have been citrus leaf miner, and scale. No problems with getting enough water. And no fruit flys here in Adelaide (it is fruit fly free).
