Thanks Glittababe, I'm trying to work out exactly what you get for a full service at an extra cost of £2000 or so? I guess you get all the boxes and guys to pack the stuff and load the container - do you get anything else?

Thanks

They all add their bit along the way I guess. We brought all our boxes, bubble wrap, fragile tape, plastic coverings, cardboard etc from Space Maker. I'd say in total we spent around £150 max. One of Mark's friends works for a printing company so he got us a lot too. Have to say (and this is no disrespect to all the good moving companies out there). While we were packing and loading our container, a removals company were doing the same in another bay at the depot, and it made us VERY pleased we'd done it ourselves!!!!! The blokes chucked bits around everywhere, they really didn't give a toss and when it came to packing up the chairs and tables they simply put a load of brown tape around them and shoved them into the container! NOTHING was packed correctly and for most part they all had fags hanging out of their mouths, dropping the ash over this poor persons stuff! Nothing was cleaned, all the muddy stuff went in. What a shame hey?

Included in our deal was delivery of the sole use 20 ft container with 6hrs to pack it (it was done and gone in 3), all the customs documentation, fumigation, dock storage and shipping from Felixstowe to Brisbane port. At the other end is a whole list of things that the clearing agent sorts (AQIS and Lo Lo - whatever that is) plus delivery to new address.

Insurance is seperate, but if you've packed it yourself, for the most part you're not covered.

Another friend of ours is paying £5600 for his stuff (4 bed house) to be delivered to Perth with Allied Pickfords, but he simply doesn't want the hassel of packing, itemising etc It is exhausting, but knowing everythings as well packed as it can be is so reassuring its worth it! Good Luck X

Thanks for the post- At the risk of sounding stoopid , I thought the container was plonked outside your house for loading by yourself.
I've obviously missed something, glittababe. You loaded your 20 ft.container at a depot, was that local to your house? was this a port designated by your shippers, clearing agents ?
Did you pack all your gear in your house and deliver it yourself to the depot or did you pack at the depot? Although not normally covered by insurance for breakages if you self pack, I assume you've can still get insurance cover for loss. I'm really sorry to be a pain, ....especially as you're short of time, with no broadband, but I suppose if I don't ask ...........

Normally they deliver the container (which stays on the lorry) to your house, only we sold our house 5 weeks ago so we packed at the house, then delivered our stuff into storage facility (mate lent us a lorry with tail lift - very handy)! Yep they insure for loss, Letton Percervil are meant to be very good, but you can google 'marine insurance' and get some quotes.

We've been living in a holiday home for 5 weeks and its sooooo cramped! We've got suitcases everywhere - half packed, unpacked, repacked etc etc We leave on Sunday. Hubby will be so relieved as I'm driving everyone mad with last minute panic things. I need valium, and alcohol in no particular order! :D

Glittababe you're a star for posting all that useful advice. Karma to you! (edit - bloomin' karma machine won't let me give you any :( )

I hope all your stuff arrives safely!

Cheers

Good on yer for the reply! thanks alot,it's filled in the gaps for us,
5weeks is a long time under those conditions, but I'm sure you'll smile when you look back later, hopefully in your new place, sipping Oz vino collapso by the pool. Good luck to you and have a safe trip.

ahhh thanks everyone. Just done the scariest thing in the world....booked a deal with UKForex! I was almost in tears when the bloke called me and explained how I transfer what little money we have to start our new life, to their account!!!! Unfortunately we haven't set up an account in aus yet, so it stays with them until we've set up an account, then we email them or call them and they transfer the money 'overnight'. Ohhh so scary!!!!!!

Hi Beth it was for a 20ft sole use container (not shared by anyone else) so you don't have to worry about the cubic feet! We had LOADS of space left over. Gutting in a way cos you always think of all the extra stuff you can take!

Hi Sue! Let hubby out eventually.....but after he'd been fumigated! Won't forget you lot on here! Will try and sort my camera out when we're back on broadband so we can post pics! 4 days to go! Nervous.....ummmm yes......

yes...watch this space! I have all the clearing agents details, all the hidden costs that 'could' be applied if AQIS need to do anything have been explained. Fingers crossed. Leave on Sunday, container leaves the port on the 4th April, delivery to Brisbane between the 10th-22nd May. I think the thing to always bear in mind is its all unpredictable; anything can happen. At least if somethings broken, we can say it was our fault!

Hi GB,

Just bumping this back up because your container might just be arriving in Brisbane today!!!

Keep us updated on how it all goes, won't you? I'm also thinking of organising shipping ourselves to keep costs down, so interested in hearing how things go with yours.

Nicky
