I used to teach the Vic Police when I was a copper. What the coppers get taught is very rudimentary.

My son did a bit of MMA when he was about 8 years old and didn't really get into it. He's 12 now and wants to get back into it.
I'm not sure what to do for him. I'm thinking Muay Thai or BJJ but even these are "sports" and are not really "self defence" as such. Then I came across this and think it sounds like it would be good but possibly a bit full on without much prior martial arts knowledge TBH they sound like psychos, but street fighting with weapons is psycho I guess:
"Streetsmartz Survival Tactics Specialising in Real World No Bull Self Defence

Simple, easy to learn and highly effective self-defence. NO BULL

Check out Krav Maga. It was developed and is currently taught to the Israeli Defence Force.

Kra maga is an excellent fighting skill, but tis very aggressive, very very physically demanding and may not suit a 14 year old until they have learned basic self defence.

Don't need any prior experience with basic self defence as they do teach beginners classes and have their own type of grading system.

Going back to self defence, I'd say Krav Maga is probably about as realistic as it gets.
Many of the traditional styles are not entirely practical. You can train for years and delude yourself that a bit of oriental mysticism is going to save your skin.
In a real fight my money would always be on a wrestler, a boxer, a kick/Thai boxer, or a streetfighter, as the training tends to be more realistic and they become used to feeling pain and ignoring it. You can become effective much more quickly.
That said, oriental mysticism is what a lot of people are really looking for in a martial art. It depends on what the person really wants apart from pure self defence (fitness, something vaguely spiritual and mystical, to belong to a club and meet people, etc).

You're probably right, but I stole the line from Frankie Boyle. I think the BBC had to apologize for it.
