Self Build Perth
Hi Lois1 hubbby here, wondered if anyone could throw some light on self building.
By trade i am a carpenter and run a building co in the uk.
I wondered how easy it would be to actually buy a plot of land and build myself, ie. employ relevant sub-contractors etc, liaise with local authoties etc
Has anyone out there done this themselves, and could throw some light on their experiences etc.
many thanks

Re: Self Build Perth
I've done it. You just register as an owner builder.
You can only build one in any 3 year period.
I think it's 3 or 5,either way there is a limit.
When I was thinking of doing it in Perth, even though I was a qualified carpenter/joiner there was a restriction that I couldn't build double storey unless I was a registered builder. So it never happened.
Just completing my own double storey in Melbourne at the mo.
Best of luck with it.

I was an owner builder in Melbourne, I also now lecture as part of an owner builder course run here every 2 months or so.
It's very easy to build it yourself indeed. However just as important as your trade skills are your project management skills.
The downside is that you have to guarantee the property yourself, which means if you sell it within 7 years of completion and the future owners find a problem, you have to fix it.

Re: Self Build Perth
We've known a few people who've done it, like my friend (female, no trade qualifications, nor did her husband). Do the owner-builder course at Home Base Wembley first: http://www.homebaseexpo.com.au/Cours...r-Builder.aspx.
