Default Security Bond on Campervans question

Hi there,

Thanks to all who reply to my campervan question earlier on. I've been looking at all the sites you gave me and I am constently noticing an excess bond of around $5000 - $8000 payable at the time of booking and or removing the vehicle. Although this is returnable it seems a hell of a lot of money. Has anyone had any experience of this? Would renting a car be cheaper? Please help!

Regards Ginny

I have had no experience with the rental bonds but you can buy a decent car
for $8,000 and sell it at the end of your time in Australia.

Hi
wen we rented a campervan we paid only 500 or 800Aud ( not sure but not
more)bond by a signed credit card paper. this is wen you take the full cover
with a own risk off about 500Aud. if you don't take the all risk you have to
pay that big amount.

Also, check with your credit card co. as to whether it has insurance that
will cover your excess if you waive it. In the case of campers or long term
rentals, most will not - but there may be a premium card or two out there
that does. Most "gold" cards and above have coverages like this for
ordinary short-term hire cars that are used according to the rental
agreement, charged to the card, and for which the renter has waived the
excess coverage.

My card would not cover the basic insurance coverage for a mpotorhome in
Australia.. it would cover a standard car rental in Canada.... in my
experience you probably won't find one that will cover a motorhome in
Australia, but that is just my opinion

My extra cover is $250 only and it is not paid out just held in the case of
damages.

I would not rent a $100,000+ vehicle for a month or longer and not have the
"full cover" liability exposure is not worth it to me.

Also check the fine print - I'm not familiar with the company you're using
but some won't allow their precious vehicles to go off the bitumen. Others
just say "not off public roads except for driveways" which is a very
different thing. It's a rediculous rule in Australia where even good rural
roads are quite often dirt, or an annoying single lane of bitumen with a
half lane of dirt on either side (so the road trains basically run you off
the road).

bond
whit the card and that was between 500 and 800aud.

and no you can't use a campervan on dirt roads ( only 4 wheel drive )
i asked about the road around Mt Buffalo(Vic) the map said unpaved and i was
allowed to drive, but in the mean time the road was sealed.

Hi Des (And everyone else who has replied)

Who did you book with again? That $250 bond seems a better option to me. In the small print that I've read it seems that in order to get that you need to pay about an extra $40 on top on the rental price. Not sure if I am right but I'm still looking.

Thanks again

Ginny

p.s. any more info ie who people have booked with please let me know.

17 -20aud a day.
