Secondary School Years In Victoria

Secondary School Years In Victoria
I have two schools telling me different, one saying my 14 year old (who is 15 on the 1st of Jan) should be in year 8 and one school saying he should be in year 9.
Which one is the norm for Victoria please?

Year 9 now. Year 10 in 2015.
If he was born on 1st Jan 2000 then he would have started school (prep) in 2005 and would therefore be in Year 9 this year.

If you have a choice, ( in qld most qrades had kids with a 2 year age span due to people holding them back, interstate systems, in IB overseas students etc etc )
Sound awful. BUT IME with 3 teens having done part or most of school in OZ, I found you could really take the pressure off the child by having them fit in with their needs. Socially advanced, academically advance, quiet kid, struggling, genius, whatever they may be, find where HE would fit in best.
The social side of things in the teen years will be just as important as the academic side, a lot of parents push up kids who are younger if they have studied overseas but at 16 that becomes hard if your the only one not driving etc.

Turning 15 on 1 Jan 2015 he will be year 10 in 2015. He will be middle to younger end of the age range so if you are enrolling now then go for year 9. If he is physically small, socially inept, struggling with work, anxious about the move etc then consider year 8.

For now or for 2015?

Yep, it's for this year, so he would go in to year 9 next year if I choose the private or year 10 if I choose the public. They are both good schools it seems so it would make sense to go for public, unfortunately there isn't a place for him in the public one until the start of the new school year in Feb.
Quoll and Jad I agree with your logic with regards to putting them in the year which suits best. It makes sense. However this son I think will be fine in the
year with his age.
Cheers.

This year is nearly over anyway- not much useful schooling to come out of it. Wait for the Y10 entry next year, unless keeping a bored teen at home is too much stress!!

Agree with this - no one will get their knickers in a knot if he's out of school until next year however, legally, if this is your local school they are actually obliged to find a place for him if he is under 17 and he should be in full time education if you wanted to push the issue. If you're looking at an out of area enrolment then they are, indeed not obliged to find a place. If it is your local school and if you do want to push the issue (personally I wouldn't bother) then approach your local District Office with a "this is a big move, he needs to establish local connections blah blah or you could just enrol him in some summer holiday programs for mid Dec+ so he gets to know kids in the neighbourhood.

Yeah I agree with you both, there's no point really trying to do anything about it now. In all honesty I don't think I could anyway. Luckily he still has an online account from his old school where he can do the work his UK mates are currently doing. Hopefully that'll keep his brain ticking over until he starts in Feb.
Cheers all.

[QUOTE=Molly Coddle;11464781]Funny you mention having the stress.
How about a job in maccas, roost, KFC, etc, he would meet loads of kids his age, learn, earn and keep outta your hair.

Yeah, not a bad idea, eldest has just handed an application in for Kmart but the youngest is too young yet. He's going to try some of the local café's though, see if he can get a washing up job or whatever.
