Second Thoughts
Hi all,
I am back on BE after sometime..for your expert advices.. I am having second thoughts on going to brisbane  with all the floods... so sadly i will have to settle in melbourne or ACT :o i've heard that oak park is known for having a high crime rate.. did i hear correctly ? is it safe to live there with 3y old daughter and aged dad (single mom).. would i be robbed or mugged ? my other option is pascovale.. does it hold the same situation as well? i'm simply clueless about ACT and not very happy to move there as i feel life might get too boring and also since i heard its kinda cold there.. any views appreciated! Mala |

Don't know about the areas of ACT but bear in mind many (most?) IT jobs there require citizenship, not just PR, this is because of govt security clearance. Make sure you check seek for your skills to verify.

Australia is an climate of severe weather extremes, if you change state according to them you could be moving several times a year. |

 Much of brisbane and surrounds are not flooded at all. I imagine the rebuild of what is destroyed in QLD will make it the boom state again anyway.

I can imagine it must be hard choosing somewhere to settle when you don't know the city or even the country, but my advice would be to choose somewhere within your budget for rent and within a 1 hour commute from the CBD. I know nothing of Oak Park, but I have not heard great things about Broadmeadows and it certainly would not be where I'd choose to live. I have friends who live in Pascoe Vale and who like it, I have friends in Brunswick and they like it, others in Camberwell and they like it, more in Cheltenham and they like it, some are in Frankston and they like it, we are in the north eastern suburbs and we like it. Melbourne is varied and vast, and caters for all sorts. There are good and not so good schools in most suburbs, there is good and not so good transport in most suburbs. To be honest, you might have to bite the bullet and wait until you get here to see whether you like the feel of whatever suburbs you've short-listed while staying in temporary accommodation. It might take a couple of weeks, but hopefully you will find your own piece of Australian paradise:fingerscrossed: |

Some Regional areas have been flooded, plus some inner city suburbs along the river which runs through one part of brisbane. The CBD was evacuated and some areas got wet but no loss of life. Sorry I though he was asking where the floods were. |
Re: Second Thoughts
And if you are worried about crime rates, have a look on the Victoria Police website, they have all the stats you can dream of...

Re: Second Thoughts
If you're going to rule a city out because of perceived dangers you won't come. Brissie CBD flooding is rare, not worth worrying about, some suburbs flood more than that but you simply find a suburb that's out of the flood zone, there are shedloads of them.
Melbourne and Sydney have both had bushfires close by over the past few years. Perth and Adelaide get bushfires round and about. Where do you draw the line? Shit happens, the world over. Show me a capital city anywhere and it's likely that some sort of catastrophe will have hit it at some point. |
