Scratching
 

Heading to my scratcher now (get it? bed), anyway, have noticed that I am still constantly scratching mozzie bites that I obtained in Tenerife in October!!!!

I know, it is bizarre.

I hope to move to Oz, Melbourne (south east) and was wondering will I look like a giant pock or will I be Ok as far as mozzies are concerned.

My first few bites here swelled up so much that I drew biro around them and nearly went to hospital! Does that make you feel better?! :o

But I'm pleased to report that after a few months my bites are now much smaller, although they do still itch like hell. I've found a couple of great anti-itch treatments though, and often carry a tube around in my handbag! It definitely doesn't need to spoil your day to day life even though it will surely piss you off at times.

(Oh and allegedly eating marmite/vegemite puts them off... but personally I prefer the bites! :D)

The trick is prevention. Use a moisturiser from Avon called Skin so Soft. There are other companies that have it by the same name but only Avons works. I am ex army and now a geologist so have always spent lots of time outdoors and trust me it works great. Because it doesnt contain deet you can wear it every day

I'm desperately trying to avoid scratching my mozzie bites any more (scratched one on my upper arm and now an area about 10 x 5 cm itches) - PLEASE let me know the anti-itch treatments you've found that work!

I have an allergy to mossies (skeeter syndrome) and the three bites I have at the moment are horrible. I am usually very careful, use spray, avoid being outside at dusk etc so dont get many but sometimes they get me and I suffer the itch, major swelling, blistering and subsequent hole in my leg (or wherever) for weeks. I use a cream to try and help with the itch and to keep out infection and take antihistamine if required.

Take regular cetirizine (zirtec) it's the best way to combat the itch....
I find that I need to take them (one a day) about a week before I go on holiday,every day whilst I'm there and about 3 days after I get back... it stops the histaminic reaction... I also eat a lot of garlic as that seems to put them off too!
I find a gel called Finistil (not available here) is good if you've got a reaction... or lanacaine local anaesthetic cream is ACE for the long term itch!

The best one I've found is called spray-eze, or something similar (can't find it right now, I carry it around so could have left it anywhere!:o) you can get it in the chemist's, it's in a little white plastic spray with red print on it.
The only downside is that when you spray it on it can dribble a bit and then it dries in to a white powdery layer on your skin. So I wouldn't use it if I was going out anywhere posh in the evening! But if you can live with the white powdery patches then it stops the itching a treat, for me anyway.
There are some creams too that are ok and at least don't leave a big residue, lots to choose from in pharmacies etc, or even supermarkets.

I also have one of the mortein plugins, and have never been bitten overnight whilst I've had it plugged in. (Although I do regularly forget to switch it off in the morning, worry slightly about the house catching fire whilst I'm out at work.... assume it must have safety thing to stop fire....?:huh:)

Oh and we have heaps of citronella candles/lamps/torches around the patio area, and keep the repellent spray by the barbie.

I will win the battle against the biting things!! :thumbsup:

Have spoken to my avon rep re skin so soft but she is not sure which one I m talking about. There is a normal one, a spray one, a bug guard, S-S-S BG one. Can anyone help?

My dh is allergic to mozzie bites but has had a severe allergic reaction to something else which is being treated at the moment by steroids until we can get an appointment up in Perth for a specialist. We have tried cutting out all the foods, changing shampoos, washing powders etc and we have now come to the conclusion that it could be the aeroguard.

We may be grabbing at straws but wat to try something different to elliminate it.
