Schools in Perth
 

Hi all,

Following on from our decision to move to Perth (but not until 2006 most likely when the house here in Melbourne has sold...), we're trying to gather information on schools.

So those of you with children both in public and private schools - how do you find them? Are there schools over there with good reputations and not so good reputations? Which ones are considered to have a good feel to them? Presumably the 'better' suburbs have the better schools - it's how it is here but I have no idea if it's the same for Perth.

We're familiar with Wesley College as there's one here in Melbourne (I assume they're linked) - we're also familiar with the big price tag... Anyway, any information any of you would care to share, we'd be very grateful for - many thanks!

Cant speak from personal experience but plenty of forums on this subject.Put perth schools in search engine and youll find loads of info

As Anya says do a search, there is some useful bits on Jill's Banana diaries from when we went through our own trauma of chosing.

Alot of is also personal preference and you can't beat seeing with your own eyes. I would strongly suggest having a look at a short list as soon as possible. Also, you need to get your name on the private lists as soon as posible especially if you are coming in 2006.

Many thanks for that. I had actually done a search on Perth Schools but hadn't found anything specific. I'll look again more thoroughly. It's the getting the name on the list for private schools that's got me jumpy as I know here we had to get our son on the list up to a year in advance so I need to get moving now for him regarding Perth. ...but is it a fair assessment to say that good suburbs = good public school? Or is there no correlation between the two in Perth?

From out visit in April we found (short summary below)

Private schools (3-4K per year) - long long waiting lists
State schools (Northern suberbs) - Wanneroo: avoid at all costs, Carine: good rep, Duncraig: very good, Woodvale: large school, Ocean Reef: large school
Private schools (12K per year) - should have no problem getting them in there (impression we got when we visited)

Search on my username and you should find a thread started back in April / May with more specific details

That's fantastic - many thanks for that. Private schools are a little more pricey there then it would seem - we've got our boy into one at 10k here but I think there are plenty that are higher. Interesting. That's two good reports on Duncraig so that's worth noting also. Cheers.

It all depends on where you want to settle in Perth, there's lots of good schools but good schools in general bring higher house prices.

If you consider Catholic private school then the fees are heavily subsidised by Catholic Eucation.

It costs us about $6k a year for our 2 plus a further $2k for books and uniforms etc.

Yeah my daughter goes to Duncraig Senior High.... am very impressed so far... the Principle was named Principle of the year last year.

But it does depend where you are going to live and if your prepared to Taxi the kid(s) to school and back

I have a 13 year old in Kinross college.......doing really well. Ocean Reef is also supposed to be pretty good ( hearsay)

South of the River ..

My kids will go to Kelmscott SHS. (Government School).

A good cross section of pupils with a wide range of abilities.

Very good discipline programme.

Lots of choices for the students.

Many students perform well at Tertiary Entrance level compared with other local schools.

It even has a Farm - specialist Agriculture program, specialist music, gifted and talented programs and ... is a Soccer specialist school... The Soccer teacher is ex. UK professinal player. Recently some year 12 pupils took out a prize as the outright winners in Australia in an analytical chemistry competition, and they won by a huge margin!

I wouldn't send my kids anywhere else locally!

hia - i live in port kennedy and my daughter goes to port kennedt primary - i personally think it is a good schoo,-,she loves it

Many thanks to all that have replied.

Regarding where we'll live, we actually would like to cling to the Southern suburbs - South Perth, Como etc. as that's where I have family. That said, I think we'd move to be near a good school. Having done a whole lot more research I've discovered two very good Montessori Schools in Perth - at least they look to be good - one in Kingsley and the other in Burswood - both about half the price of the top private schools. Wesley seems to have a superb reptuation but has a rather big price tag of course.

Anyone that knows anything about the Montessoris, I'd welcome feedback.
