SCHOOLS in Melbourne (GOOD no GOOD?)

We are going to Melbourne in less than one month and are looking for a private school for our daughter (7). One told me that public schools are not so good (true, not true??)

Are there any recommendation about private schools in and around Melbourne?

Thanks
Plume

This isn't a recommendation as to specific schools, but this website might help ...
http://www.ais.vic.edu.au/

Best regards.

Alan,

Do you know if 'League Tables' are posted for schools in Oz, specifically Victoria ?

Cheers,
Paul.

Paul,

I haven't seen any school league tables thus far in Victoria. My experience with my older son in Year 6 is that there are tests in certain core subjects that measure how your child is achieving relative to others in the State (and which we see as parents), but that these results aren't published for general consumption.

The best you can probably do is to look at a selection of schools' VCE (= Victoria Certificate of Education) results which the students sit in Year 12.

Best regards.

Re: SCHOOLS in Melbourne (GOOD no GOOD?)

Plume,

There are lots of very, very good private schools in Melbourne. Melbourne would have the highest percentage of Private Schools in Australia. Some of the public schools are also very good, but unfortunately you only know about these by repuatation/word of mouth ... bit difficult for those of you just arriving. Private Schools are located all over the city, so your choice will come down to which school is the best fit for your daughter ... eg. I went to a relatively small private girls school called Strathcona located in Canterbury. It was excellent and suited me as it had the extra-curricular activities that I loved and the smaller environment meant a closer relationship with the staff. However, a larger school such as MLC in Kew or PLC in Burwood which have huge curriculum choices may suit your daughter better.

Most Victorian children don't start Private School until year 7 (first year of secondary school) as most of the public primary schools are fine.

There are some secondary Public Schools that are very good and require entrance exam ... such as Melbourne High (boys) and MacRobertson Girls.

Your choice is quite large and it would be worth visiting the schools and asking as many questions as you can. Most of the Private Schools will also have websites. It will also depend on where you want to live, although the public transport system services many of the schools.

Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any questions. Have been living in Melbourne since the age of 10 and love it!

Hiya,

How can I find a list of Public Schools in Victoria, specially in the subarbs close by to Melbourne? Any good Public Schools for Early Learning?

Thanks

Princef
