School recommendations south/coast of Brisbane

Am looking any recommendations for good state schools in the coast areas of Wellington Point to Redland bay, I have a 15yr old and almost 12 yr old. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ormiston college is meant to be pretty good....I would check out the fees before you get too excited though

I assume you're looking at primary for the younger child and high school for the elder one. Ormiston State Primary and Wellington Point State Primary are quite good among the state schools. The state high schools in the area are not as highly rated as those closer to the city or those in the western suburbs. Depends on what your kids need though. Many parents are happy with the public system and others prefer going private.

Ormiston College is private. Fees are about $8000/year for junior school and $9000 for senior school.

As Mrs JTL says, Ormiston College is a private school and I note you were asking about state schooling.

Have a look at Wellington Point and Cleveland State high for your older child. They are reasonable schools. They don't make any "top" lists but they are not really bad either. Victoria Point doesn't seem to be so well thought of. That's only hearsay though.

There are many many primary schools in the area. Ormiston primary used to be pretty dire, but I think with the new head in there for the last couple of years things have improved. Thornlands State school is supposed to be good and the new Bayview school is also very highly thought of, but you have to live in the catchment for that one. Wellington point state primary seems to be well thought of as well.

To be honest there are HEAPS of primary schools in the area!! I would take a drive around when you get here and visit some of them and see if one jumps out at you as being right for your child.

Is nearly 12 not high school starting age?

No that would be nearly 13!

Kids turn 12 in year 7, which is the final year of primary school.

Ah.. So they go a year later than in England?

Well.......yes and no......it's all changing!!

Queensland has been out of synch with the other states. In other states the kids go up to high school in year 7....whereas in Queensland it's year 8. So my daughter who turns 13 in February would have already done a year in high school in NSW.....but here she is only going up now. She will however finish school at the same time as her peers in NSW!

BUT in a couple of years from now they are changing that so that year 7 will also become high school in Queensland.

All very confusing! The cut off dates in different states are also different.....it really is very silly not to have a national policy on the schooling system!
