I wouldn't think they did as when I was at school I didn't get taught Australian history. Just a thought.

We have very strong connections with the *Jeeeeeermans* (c) Stan Boardman but I don't hear my kids coming home singing "Home on the Rhine" ...

Here's an alphabetical list of VCE subjects in Victoria. Under E for English there is only mention of the language and having it as a second language - not the history. Under H for History there's Australian, Renaissance Italy and Revolutions.

They actually taught British history at my old school (Launceston College, Tasmania) but only at years 11 and 12.

The course was later discontinued, due to lack of interest and lack of relevance.

Your friend might need to be reminded that he/she is moving to a different country with its own history.

If they do and you think thats strange, my daughter aged 15 came home from school the other day and moaned that they are being taught gay rights in geography. . Im trying to get my head around what does gay rights and geography have in common ?! We are still in UK.

Should only take 5 minutes!

So, they teach Italian History and Revolutions eh? Hmm, I'd have thought English/British/UK history was a bit more relevant than that...

This is Years 11 and 12 (VCE) and I would think any reference to English History would come earlier, if at all, in the curriculum. It can be studied at tertiary level.

Oh, and the English will tell you that Australian History started at 1788 but it started a bit before that, the Domesday Book, Magna Carta etc.

Aboriginal history is studied as part of Australian History.

British & Australian history is intertwined. A fact a lot of Aussies choose to forget. Australia as we know it would not exist without Britain. If they are not teaching some relevant British history, then the pupils are not being taught history properly.

Given that they don't teach much British history in Scotland (can't speak for E & W and NI), why would one expect Australian schools to include it as a separate subject?

English history is largely taught where relevant as part of Australian history eg the reasons for the penal settlement being established etc. There are serious moves afoot in the UK to remove history from the curriculum (in favour of Modern Studies and Social Studies). A retrograde step I believe but one under discussion now.
