That's easy to happen with childcare where the govt payment is directly linked to the service....but with this payment where it can be used for books from officeworks, computers from apple, pens from kmart, I don't think the same argument holds as strongly.

You don't claim...it's paid without claiming as part of the existing family tax scheme. It's a tax redistribution, just like all the other tax redistributions. There are hundreds of them that benefit all sorts of situations...home investors, private health insurance, families, stock market investors, small business etc etc.

Of course you could argue they all should disappear and tax would be lower but then politicians who use them extensively to influence society (take a bow John Howard) would be out of a job.

I guess if we argue just for the removal of some tax redistribution (ie families), while leaving the rest, is really arguing for a tax rise for a particular part of society.

Resurrecting this thread as the law didn't pass in time, July 2014 schoolkids bonus will be paid to eligible families between 2nd and 16th of July. More info at
