School catchment areas when renting...
Hi all,
We are heading over in January and will, of course, be renting for a while.
I need to get my daughter enrolled at a primary school before applying for the visa ( student visa ) but don't know at this stage where we will be renting or where we will ultimately be buying, so, where do we stand with this catchment area business ?
I've spoken to one school ( will be ringing several tonight )who didn't have any spare places, but they didn't ask me where we would be living.
Do we have to live in the catchment area of a school, even if it's 'private', ie, a Catholic school ?
Any advice would be very welcome.

Catholic schools, tend to be extremely expensive, in comparison to other schools ( in my experience )

We're in QLD and we had to sort out out a rental for proof we were in the catchment area, before we could even book an appointment to see the school!

Hi we will be on SC in QLD, the school had strict catchment criteria but as we are immigrants we could do a stat dec to say we would be looking to be housed within the catchment area.
Since we were told that we just secured a rental within the catchment and have been told she has got a place.

im affraid that most schools in QLD will ask to see proof that you are in the catchment area of the school as more and more people are moving into the school area and the schools need to be able to control the amount of people going to the school, we had and all the familys we have relocated onto North Lakes/ Mango Hill have been asked to show a rental agreement when they see the head of the school to see if they can get their kids into the school, it is geeting tighter by the schools as many people do move around and it is unfair if a family living near a school cant get their kids in because a family living 10k away brings their kids to school, so the school does look at where people live, you can email the head of North Lakes school and ask he does not mind emailing you back www.northlakescollege.qld.edu.au
all the best

Thanks for your replies.
I'll be calling more schools shortly, so should know what's what later.
Cheers.

Re: School catchment areas when renting...
Plenty of schools on the Sun coast have catchment areas. Classes jammed full and still taking more kids
Went to a barbie on weekend in Mt Creek where one son will be going to school (not in Zone but he was accepted in their Zenith/IB programme) anyway A Doctor at the Barbie was saying Mountain creek primaries now 1300kids 2300 at the high and a new housing estates going in the zone with 600 houses and no new school, gawd knows what happens then.
Catholic schools round here are pretty full and long waiting lists, our neighbours from Perth came from a catholic school and cant get in, Sienna catholic, mate can only get one kid in and she goes to church there.
