School Catchment Area
just a quick question regarding being in a catchment area for a particular school, is there a rough mileage/Km circumference guide from the school in order to be in a particular school's catchment?
thanks all

Not that I've ever noticed and not all schools have catchment areas. You'd have to check out the schools you're interested in and see what they say on their web site and on the state education site.

Re: School Catchment Area
There's often very little logic to it, in my experience. You might live in a suburb that has a school with the same name, but your street address is outside their boundary and you have to go to the school whose boundary falls on your side of the street. If you have a particular school in mind for your children, carefully check the boundary with the school - never go by the word of a real estate agent. Bear in mind that boundaries sometimes get changed, sometimes with little warning and no consultation with the local community. Local populations can change much more rapidly here than in the UK, often catching planners and parents on the hop. Sometimes schools get closed down, "due to dropping numbers", although this might be more likely to occur if the school is on a valuable piece of land ripe for development.

Re: School Catchment Area
The local catchment area is defined by the equidistant boundary based on vehicular trafficable routes between one school and its neighbouring school/s. A designated public walkable route to school may be considered on a case by case basis. Minor adjustments are negotiated at the school level to meet local road access and entry points. Variations to the equidistant boundary can be made via a submission to the Chief Facilities Officer, Strategic Facilities, outlining the catchment boundary and the justification.
The school's enrolment capacity for students who live outside the local catchment is dependant upon:
- the school's enrolment capacity
- catering for in-catchment enrolments
- allowing for in-catchment growth during the year
- ensuring an even spread of students across all year levels while maintaining class size targets

There are usually catchment maps and if you delve deeply enough into the state department websites you can often find them. If not you can ask the Ed dept to direct you to a link for them, they should be public information.
As the others have said, you can live on one side of a street and be zoned for school A and on the other side be zoned for school B so it is wise to check if you have a particular school in mind.

Most schools have a map of the catchment area on their web site.
What's on your current shortlist and we may be able to help.

OH is a carpenter, so work wise i dont think it really matters too much where we are based as from what i can gather through BE there is generally some form of construction going on within a reasonable commute. So really kids/schools are top of the list.
Thanks
