School Banding
Hi there
We have been visiting a couple of school websites and have noticed that it will say "It is a Band 8 school". I have tried to find out what this means but so far I havent been able to. Do any of you local people over there know what this actually means.
thanks

Never heard of it. Just done a quick search of the Education Queensland site and the only mention of banding is the Principal Levels. Nothing to do with the schools.

Looks like it is just a Queensland thing which says
Government Schools are allocated a band based on a review conducted by Education Queensland's Human Resources Branch, as required by the relevant industrial award. Valid values of band are '04' to '11'.
Not that that is much help at all!

Doesn't sound like it's relevant to someone choosing a school for their child, otherwise I guess we'd all know about it (presumably). I'd email the school and ask.

I remember answering this same question in about 2004/5 ?
Not sure what my answer was back then though
But no parents worry about it, ask about, or even really know about it

Re: School Banding
Over here in NZ we have ratings of schools according to deciles which is the economic standing of the community in which the school resides. So I was mainly interested to know if this was what these numbers meant and which order these numbers went in. For example if you lived in a low socio-economic area your school would have a decile rating of 1, if you lived in the higher affluent area your school would have a rating of 10. Based on these deciles the government does their funding and how much these schools actually get from them and this will lead to how much a parent then has to pay towards the eduction. Typically the higher rating schools are better academically because of more parental involvement but this is not always the case. A lower rating school will get a lot more govt funding than a higher rating school.

Re: School Banding
Just quickly looking again, I found this:
at: http://soscanberra.com/national-issu...ol-comparisons
Western Australia
Schools are grouped into ‘like-school’ bands based on their socio-economic index score. There are nine bands. The most disadvantaged schools are in Band 0 and the most advantaged schools are in Band 8. Band 4 schools are ‘average’.
The information is only provided to schools,

A less desirable school to work in does not necessarily mean it's less desirable to have your kids there of course- the factors looked at are totally different so I'd ignore the banding.
Don't quote me on this though, we're in VIC- but I looking into moving to QLD a couple of years back and seem to remember this being a factor that made us go to VIC where we could apply to work in any school we liked.
