Is this a scam?

A mate of mine is selling his car, an old Ford MII RS 2000 escort in Perth. He advertised it in the local trade paper the quoka.

He's been contacted by someone in Queensland who wants to buy the car for $7000 sight unseen. Now the prospective buyer says he will transfer the money into my mates account (not Paypal) directly for payment. He needs my mates bank details but also a copy (not the actual) of the transfer docs filled in and a copy of my mates driving licence as he says he needs this information to register the car in Queensland.

Is this a scam? does any one in queensland know if you need the owners driving licence details for a vehicle transfer?

It sounds i bit iffey to me.

I have no idea sorry but just wanted to say it sounds very dodgy. I know I wouldn't give out my information like that, I even hate using paypal as I have been stung a few times using that.

It's got SCAM written all over it mate.

I had a car for sale and listed it on carsales and gumtree.

Couple of people contacted me saying they are interested in buying (without seeing it). She/he said 'an agent' will come and pay with bank cheque and take posession.

Put it this way - no one in this world will transfer 50$ into your friend's bank account without having a 'look' at the goods/services....so just ignore all this BS.

Cheers

You are kidding me right? They are asking for bank details, driver licence and transfer documents!! It's practically giving away your life/identidy. They will then use it to open credit cards / take loans / get access to the bank account etc.

I get all the details - it's easy to call the bank, answer 2 ID questions and boom!

Think mate...

Mate, I have few years of experience working in credit risk and banks in general. I have seen this happen before..to many. People get sucked in. To no it's a no brainer - you don;t give you any personal details to anyone. PERIOD.

Re: Is this a scam?

I just posted something like this myself because I'm trying to sell my car and been contacted by people in the UK wanting to buy it sight unseen. Total scam!

I was given this link by someone, have a read

http://forums.tradingpost.com.au/Topic3070-64-1.aspx

I've decided to trade my car in but if I wasn't I would be asking for a bank cheque or cash and the person buying has to show up NOT an agent

WA transfer docs won't do him any good registering a car here in Queensland. You certainly don't need the sellers driving license. It's a scam to get your details. He wants a copy of your license because it will have your signature on (if it is the same as Queensland).

Re: Is this a scam?

Cheers for all the replies everybody. My mate contacted the licencing authority in Queensland and they confirmed that you dodn't need licence details.

I thought it was a scam to get the car, obviously the car is a diversion when it's really the ID their after.

Cheers for helping.
