Whilst I have no time for Gordon Brown, his government and most of what he/they stand for, he has inherrited this mess from his useless predicessor Tony Blair. Together they have reaped what they have sown over the years.
Added to this there are the costs of fighting wars in countries that couldn't care less and a global financial crisis created by a greedy western world too engrossed in political power to make sure the right laws were in place to protect the every day man in the street. Money, greed, political power and fat cat bonuses have ruled.
This Daniel whatsisname is apportioning what's happened squarly on Brown's shoulders when in reality this is a British and indeed global train crash that's been waiting to happen for years.
The UK is a mess. There's no doubt about that. But then so is every country in the world at the moment.
Blame game solves nothing. Solid actions need to speak louder than words right now.

Re: Says it all really
I am waiting for the first person to stand up and blame Thatcher. Well someone always does at some point!
Picture the scenario, couple go into debt counsellors, sit down and explain that they have been on a serious spending binge for 10 years. They now have the best plasma TVs (NHS), a huge house (large government offices), flashy cars (big expense claims) but have no savings and still have a huge debt to service. Their income (tax intake) is reducing and their ability to pay off everything is nil.
Their considered opinion is that they should borrow even more to spend their way out of the problem. Tell all their creditors that it is a problem of global proportions and we are all in it together.
What do you think the counsellor would say.........................?

Re: Says it all really
OK then I will.
the seeds of much of this were sewn by the Thatcher government.
there was massive deregulation and relaxing of credit controls and an evangelical push to encourage property ownership as an 'investment'...it was seen as a way to ensure personal wealth which would then relieve the state of responsibility for social care in the future.
Greed was also seen as a desirable quality
add that to the virtual destruction of the UK's manufacturing base and you have a recipe for disaster.
I lived and worked through Thatcher's reign and the language of greed was everywhere.

The British people elected these morons and have continually re-elected them over the last decade. They therefore have the government they deserve.
Congratulations.
Congratulations.

Aw c'mon, she was the right person at the right time...
I remember voting for the first time in the '79 election... I was working nightshift in a factory at the time and well remember the crap that went on...
Her hard line attitude was just what was needed then...

I don't live in the Yookay, so it's a big 'meh' from me.
