Went round to our neighbours last night, for a meal, and he got a phone call on his laptop.........after some explaination, its via http://skype.com/ and is completely and totally free. You just need the people you ring to have it set up on their pc, and bingo. The clarity of the call was superb, all you need is a microphone, the other caller is heard through the speakers. We went out bought a microphone, for about $15 and set it up, its absolutely superb and far better than using the phone, because there is no delay.........oh and its free.

yes, the call quality is far superior. and you can have conference calls - but beware it is peer-to-peer, so don't expect wonderful quality on a conference call if you are on dialup!

I'll second that, its superb, especially as the phone system over here is far from adequate, you can hardly hear the person at the other end, even on local calls. Give me Skype anyday.

Although one thing that isn't clear is - do you have to be online and does it work better if you are on broadband. If you are on a 'pay as you go' style dial up then it wouldn't be free if you do indeed have to be online.

You do have to be online because it works across the Internet , so the concept of 'free' means there is no extra charge on top of your internet charge - so Skype wont charge you for making calls anywhere in the world for any duration.

Skype is great, we use it regularly to speak to our family in Perth, we also run msn messenger alongside of it so that we can use our webcam, its a great way of keeping in touch.

Its only free computer-computer. If you want to phone a landline from your computer then you have to pay for their Skype out service.

How much credit do you have (you have to pay for calls to people not on skype and this is called SkypeOut)
