Rural Australia?
 

Hello,
we are now seriously talking about making the move to Australia. We have enough points.

However everyone seams to be talking about the city or large towns.

We prefer rural living, eg house in the UK was on its own surrounded by farmers fields. Nearest shop/tiny village was 3 mile walk or drive. No regular bus service. We have kids but they also like rural living.

I realise Australia rural living can mean something completly different. e.g desert wilderness!! Im not saying every rural place is for us, but we really dont want to go to the city.

Have pondered WA, and seen rural teaching jobs.

Anyone going to rural place in Australia or going ?

Any input appreciated.

PS, we are currently working in EU so have moved out of the UK. So know we can stand on our own two feet without family support. This country is not English speaking either!! We have enjoyed this adventure but think Australia is our final place.

Hi,
I would say if you are after a rural living consider looking at Tasmania, I shouldn't say this becasue it could make more people want to move to there. My wifes mum lives in the North East about 45 mins drive from Launceston. The landscape is lovely lots of wildlife. Some nice little villages. We are hoping to move out there from Preston in November if we get my VISA.
And if you want a big night out you can always get a cheap flight to Melbourne or even the ferry over. Lots of big sporting events here. Not sure what you are into?

We want rural (semi rural anyway) too Gemma, we are presently in UK in coverted barn on single track road one mile long with only two houses on it and just surrounded by fields and love it, nearest village is a couple of miles, so would be looking for similar. There seems to be lots of little places about 40 minutes or so inland from WA and yet only about the same from Perth so not too isolated either as I don't suppose rural in UK has anywhere the same meaning as rural in Oz. I've found the google earth handy as you can view areas easily and of course there is always loads of very useful advice on here :)

In Rural W.A the distances are vast, what about rural Victoria a much smaller state less distances between large towns, nice countryside, milder climate, l like coastal rural Victoria, great beaches and scenic coastline ,maybe withion a few hours from Melbourne. Perhaps you should travel around OZ first before deciding where to live.

South Western West Australia, say in an arc from Bunbury over to Albany is worth looking at. Plenty of small towns and some larger, many will have schools but not much in the way of 'services'
Lots of farmland, some dairy/beef and a lot of crop farming as well as wine.
Not as hot as Perth and certainly not as remote as the northern parts of WA.

I have to say that if you think you have to go bush to get rural then you are thinking wrongly, possibly foolishly.

There are lots of places that are just outside a town that are equaly as rural as anywhere in the UK.

My uncle lives in an area with about 15 houses around him, he has 3 achers and to his left the next house is 5k away sitting on a block of about 23 achers. Thay are not cut off from anything but still have silence at night and no street lamps, the area is green and pleasant and definatly not a deasert.

All along the east coast behind the cities and towns are the hinterlands and they often resemble the UK in appearance.

I can highly recommend VIC solely because you can get that seperation you want yet still be just over an hour from Melbourne.

If you don't have to have ks from your neighbour but be on acreage then you can do it less than an hour.

If you don't care about Melbourne take the pick of any regional centre in VIC and live outside that where you get that seperation.

we are teachers in what is considered 'rural' VIC, however, its not 'rural' enough for us as and we are looking for more land, larger house etc. but still only a 20 min drive to work.. We love where we are just want more from our lifestyle over here.. PM me if you want any more info.

I'm impressed! It's all relative - seems to me then you don't want to be anywhere near a centre which I only mentioned because many people want to be somewhere.

You could move anywhere away from a centre..........far enough...if that makes sense.

I guess you are looking for real character. Anyone can be literally outback (the other extreme) - would that be OK?

l agree if your moving to WA and want somewhere rural, go to the southern part, Baunbury Albany, green coastal countryside , don't go to Northern or Western outback WA, in the the desert, middle of nowhere.
Someone said Tasmania, in my opinion that has the best scenery anywhere in OZ, with a climate similar to the UK, would be a great place for a rural lifestyle, cleanist air in the world, maybe also consider Victoria within a few hours from Melbourne.

Ballarat is a city , some people consider it to be an outer suburb of Melbourne ,
If you want somewhere more rural maybe move outside Ballarat further into Western Victoria, some really nice places around Warrnambool and Portland on the West coast of Victoria and also the Grampain mountain region further north. Have you had a chance to explore other parts of Victoria outside the Melbourne Ballarat region?

thanks for your ideas however we already have in mind what and where we want to live. And yes, we have done loads of exploring.

Whilst in some peoples opinions Ballarat may be considered a city we live in a rural part of it as designated by the local council!

Plenty of options that could suit your needs in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsular, both an hour or two from Adelaide's services but far enough away to not see Adelaide, just countryside and small villages.

and according to locals worst UV (burning) index as they reckon the hole in the ozone is above them!

seriously though we've met masses of Tassie's in SA and they all love their homeland - and the pictures are glorious.

nice to see you on here Gem and seems you've had lots of input from all over the country which is excellent - I'd say start looking for jobs and see what's where - however one word of warning .... some people in your trade have found it very hard in rural areas. Adbrits have a great girl Lolly - look it up and read her story just so you have all in the info possible!

as I've said before we love where we are and wouldn't dream on being anywhere else but it's not for everyone!
