running a car

can anyone tell me the cost of running a car in the melbourne area. are there any hidden costs that need to be watched for. obviously it depends on the mileage i travel but thats not really what i'm looking for, just the costs of putting a car on the road every month. it also seems to be cheaper to buy a newish car rather than an older model.
any opinions would be appreciated

many thanks for any replies

Re: running a car

hidden costs?

Speed cameras.... depending on how you drive and how quickly you assimilate to local conditions you might want to budget for a couple of convictions in your first couple of years - allow $500 and unless your an incurable leadfoot you might be ok.

:p

other hidden costs might include CBD parking if you're intending to drive to work and road tolls - both of which your costs will vary depending on where you work and where you live.
