Run up to Australia Day / how busy south of Melbourne?
Our odyssey round this marvelous island continues and we will be in Phillip Island in the run up to Australia Day. Some friends from Europe are coming over to Melbourne and will be spending a few days with friends in the city, then a few days with us (though not necessarily on Phillip Island itself) and then a few days with other friends somewhere a little further east than Phillip Island. We'll be meeting up with them on Wednesday 23 January and they are off on Australia Day (so three nights).
We haven't yet spent Australia Day near a big city and are a bit concerned about how busy it will be and to what extent that will make exploring the area difficult. I've already heard that even getting onto and off of Phillip Island will be a challenge due to traffic; is that likely to be true? And how busy should we expect the Queenscliff / Sorrento ferry to be? And the Mornington Peninsula area?
Our original grand plans seem likely to be scaled down as we don't want to spend all our time in traffic queues. Or are we worrying unnecessarily?
