Ok so got my letter of job offer today and we are obviously delighted :)
So excited. The only thing is, we have been posted in Roma and do not know much about it, We can apply to move in the future as the company has branches elsewhere however we are there for the moment. Any info would be much appreciated, especially on houses and schools. There are no houses to rent on real estate which scares me slightly  Are there any members who stay there ? Thanks in advance again  Its pretty much the starting point for several multi billion coal seam gas projects being constructed piping gas to Gladstone on the coast. The property shortage is due to large amount of gas workers and recent flooding. There's certainly worse places to live. |
Re: Roma Qld
-Fish , nice link for abc thing and pics are amazing
Jamfc , very good link indeed which will help me loads Pollyana and everyone else , thanks so much. Looks like they need workers and Glasgow has a 8% unemployment rate so 1% sounds actually pretty low ! I do not have accomidation from my company however they will compensate me for a rental ..... what good is that if I can not find one  May just have to stay in a motel or holiday park until 1 pops up ! |
Re: Roma Qld
Roma started life as a cattle and wheat town in 1867. In 1906 natural gas was discovered there and used for town lighting, and by 1969 sufficient gas had been discovered to warrant building a pipeline to Brisbane - the first major gas pipeline in Australia.
In the past 4-5 years the region between Roma in the west and Dalby in the east has been extensively developed for the production of coal seam gas, and Roma is now a major supply centre for this industry. As a result the airport is being upgraded and it is next to impossible to find a motel room unless booking weeks in advance - so make sure you have guaranteed accommodation before arriving. It's a nice town with good amenities and great access to the surrounding countryside - I hope you're not the sort of person who can only exist in a big city! |

Roma's not a bad little spot, relative to other Western Queensland towns.
Roma is a big "hub" for regional Qld. Everything goes through there. A lot of people travel through Roma, some staying for a few hours, others a few days. My only tips would be as follows: 1) do not live near the warrego highway. 2) steer clear of the areas that are more likely to flood. In terms of accommodation- If I were in your shoes I would be pushing the company for assurances that they will help you find a place to live, within your means. Accommodation will be problematic. |

I agree with you. Anyone who hasn't been to Roma might actually be a bit surprised to find a reasonably booming town out in the middle of nowhere, with shiny new car yards and all the mod-cons. However - it's all relative, as you say.

To be honest I am struggling BIG TIME for accomidation. I will ask my employer that before I commit. Do you think it may because the floods have just happened that no rental is available ? Thanks |

Re: Roma Qld
From your posts I infer:
a) Your employer is a national company providing some specialist service, and b) You are coming over on a 457 visa (company sponsored) so you have some specialist skills that are not easily found in Australia (or in Roma at any rate). Based on that I would think you are in a reasonable position to put some pressure on your employer to assist in finding accommodation for you.

Cherokee I think you hace a good point and I will ask them to provide it. They are desperate to bring me over so a guess they have to prove that to me ! |
Re: Roma Qld
