Roadtrip - Darwin or not?

On a road trip from Melbourne via Red Centre and eventually round to Cairns etc, would you recommend a detour upto Darwin or head straight over to Queensland and turn off at Tennants Creek

When are you going and how long have you got ?

If its in the dry and you've plent of time then go for it but be aware that this
detour will be a round trip of 2000 km , more if you make the obvious side trips to
Kakadu and Lichfield NP's

YES. go to Darwin.

You will need to see Kakadu, Litchfield and much more, over there... it's worth it.

Depends (like most things) - what are your interests, when are you going (quite
important) and what are you driving? The beef roads can be dead bloody boring (and
dangerous - they are often a centre strip of bitumen with a quarter lane on each side
- road trains take up the one paved lane and throw off everything in their paths,
meaning you have nowhere to go but into the bush and sometimes into reflecting
posts). On the other hand, the top end in the wet can be impassible...

what do you wish to see? If you wish to see Kakadu and Litchfield then go the
extra distance.
