Default Road trip at christmas

Hi all, new to this forum but been in Aus now for a couple of years.

I'm thinking of driving down to the Gold Coast from Cairns at Christmas. Can anyone suggest really good places to stop? I'm thinking of doing a couple of stops in both directions. The obvious places are Airlie Beach and Hervey Bay. Love to hear your suggestions.

Aha. Termites.

OK, so what's your recommendation for the east coast drive then?

Well if I tell you the Geek fancied driving from Sydney to Cairns for our first domestic holiday, you'll realise just how little we know about the geography of the land.

You know my favourite place up there, and it's not far from your usual weekend stomping grounds. Lots of Queenslanders on here though; hopefully some will have some suggestions. (Rudi's one now, BTW.)

My interest in a motel, in general, is inversely proportional to the cost of spending a night in it.

Perhaps you could tell me more about Hervey Bay though, is it worth a visit?

I only stayed there for a week, yeah it's nice enough, you can't go wrong though on this coast!

Ok. I'll go, and then I'll tell you lot what it's like.

Anyone else heading south at Chrimbo? I suppose someone to share the petrol costs with would be good if we reckon we could get on.
