You mean Rego? It varies by state but my recent renewal in QLD was just shy of $600 (it includes 3rd party insurance).

Because it includes an insurance component the amount will vary within a state as well as from state to state.

For Victoria you can check on the Vicroads website.

In WA it will only cost about $450-$500 a year. The bigger the vehicle the more espensive the registration costs per year.

How does it work over there then re: tax/insurance? I am guessing that like over here in the UK, cars need annual tax/insurance/servicing/MOT/whatever else I've forgotten. How do you go about fully comp insurance?

Also what's the deal on UK driving licenses? I can use mine for a few months I believe?

Registration (rego) is paid either 6 monthly or yeary, it's up to you. It covers you for 3rd party personal injury only. 3rd party property damage or comprehensive insurance is separate and is with whoever you choose as your insurer. In WA no mot is required.
It's just a straight swap of your car drivers license in WA, just have to have an eye test, pay your money and away you go. This needs to be done within 3 months of arriving.

Your car will need rego - this is like UK road tax and you can get it for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months at a time (well in SA it's 3, 6 , 9 or 12 anyhow). It has included in it 3rd party compulsory insurance which covers you for third party injuries to people only. You can also get other insurance to cover you for damage to your vehicle and other vehicles, although you don't have to have it. There's loads of different providers about, so it's just a case of shopping around and getting a deal you're happy with.

In some states I believe it's compulsory to have a service - MOT type thing done every year. We have ours done every 6 months, but it's not compulsory in SA.

You can drive on your UK licence for 3 months, but change it as soon as you can because it's good to have for ID, which you will need a lot

You're very right there, I need my ID regularly to obtain vodka! :P

I frequently get mistaken for a 16 year old, although I'm not too fussed about that, I'm sure I'll appreciate my immature looks as I get old

Thanks for everyones help so far I keep getting these bouts of excitement, although I am trying to hold back a bit seeing as it all seems so far off. I have my visa application pack all complete now except for an updated reference and one university certificate to sign.

*keeping fingers and toes crossed*

Thanks again
*drivel over*

No yearly roadworthy test required in Vic either. Only when you sell a car.

Generally, in Vic, rego + fully comp insurance is cheaper than UK tax disc and fully comp.

And in NSW, all cars over three years old have to have an annual road-worthy test (called a 'pink slip').

No MOT's in Queensland, no insurance required either (apart from the compulsary 3rd party included in the rego). It's worked out on the amount of cylinders your car has. I beleive my V6 is about $700 a year.
The only time you have to have the car checked is when you sell it. If it's kept in the family for 20 years you'll never have to take it into a garage for inspection.
