Default Rip-off flights from Aus - confirmation?

Trying to get back to the UK in July.

Searched on Australian websites - getting prices of $2200 per person.

Then tried a Singapore travel agent (www.chanbrothers.com.sg) and found what were essentially the same flights as were leaving Perth (routing through Singapore) for $900AUD ($1100 SGD) (British Airways).

In other words the plane costs $1100 to get from Perth to Singapore (5 hours) and $900 to get from Singapore to Manchester (13 hours).

Can anyone explain this any other way apart from "because the airlines have no competition from Perth and can get away with it"?

The only way to get around it is to take Tiger Air to Singapore and pick up a cheap ticket from there - but even Tiger Air - so called low cost - are still charging over $500 return between Perth and Singapore.

check: http://www.flightcentre.com.au/GNE?f...ss=Y&x=57&y=16
Some cheaper flights with lufthansa and qatar airways

I think you're right about lack of competition though.

Its not just Perth. A return from Sydney to UK costs at least 200 POUNDS more than a return from the UK to Sydney.

When are are going, how much was the tax and who did you book with?

I have paid $2216 (including all taxes) flying from Melbourne to Manchester in June (Emirates). Booked through Flight Centre. Tried loads of websites and most were quoting around $2700 some were quoting over $3000. All those offering cheaper flights, there weren't any available.

Thanks for the replies - does anybody have any thoughts about the difference between the Singapore prices and the ones from Perth (Australia)?

Watch out for some special offers coming up for travel over the next few months as we are entering Australian "low season", so demand is lower. July maybe a problem though as it is UK high season which affects fares and capacity at this end. If you are near Sydney, I think Virgin Atlantic have got some sale fares on for a week or so, but not sure if they are for UK or HKG.

It's not just Perth. Flying from the East Coast to Europe costs more than from Perth. Australian consumers have been conditioned to being ripped off and accept it without question. $500 return to Singapore is not bad though. I'm looking to head over to Carns to look at investment property and the cheapest flights I can find are $650 return.

We've recently booked return flights for 2 people from Perth to Manchester on 12th June and its cost us just under $5,000!!

I checked Singapore website and for the same flights from the UK on similar dates it was approx 1,200 GBP!

Talk about being ripped off, but I suppose its just supply and demand etc given the time of year.
