Default Retirement Visa and the Money

Has anyone obtained a retirement visa recently and made the move ? I`m interested in what actually happens to the A$350,000 you have to take with you. Is it locked away in a bond fund ? or is it left completely within your control to buy a property over in Australia ?
I`m only asking `cause I don`t want to sell my house in the UK and find the proceeds locked up for 12 months at the "other end".
Any previous experience would be helpfull.
