Default Request for info from residents near Sydney East Hills/Airport trainline

Hi folks, I'm new to this board so please be gentle! I'm due to arrive in Sydney at the beginning of February and I will be working at the University of Western Sydney, Campbelltown Campus.

I'm looking for information on the suburbs the surround the East Hills trainline as it seems the most easily accessible route to get into Campbelltown from relatively near the coast. In particular the following places seem convenient enough as a start point for a commute to Campbelltown (although I haven't managed to come across much information about them yet):-

Bexley North
Kingsgrove
Beverly Hills
Riverwood
Padstow
Revesby
East Hills

Also, several places on the Eastern suburbs line that I can connect from at Wolli Creek at a push:-
Como
Oatley
Penthurst
Hurstville
Allawah
Kogarah
Rockdale

I know this kind of question depends on the person answering it so a bit of information about us. My partner and I are in our mind 20s and are both professionals. We are looking for a place close to the coast with decent transport links, and we have a budget of around $600 per week max.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance

G

There's nothing really wrong with any of the suburbs in your first list - but they are rather unexciting, bog-standard suburbs mostly developed in the 1950s/1960s. They're not particularly desirable and -as you've noticed - are a long way from the beach. Consequently they will be quite hot in the summer. Can't really recommend them to anyone coming from the UK, which is probably why there's not much info about them on here.

Some the suburbs in your second list are better. Not Hurstville (huge shopping centre, large Chinese population, good for shopping and eating but not really for living) or Rockdale or Kogarah (horrible, ugly, busy roads, lots of flats). The best of the bunch are Oatley or Como. Oatley is lovely. It has a large bushy, park and is on the water. Como is also OK as it's on the water too.

If you want to be closer to the coast, then any of the stations on the Cronulla line would also suit. Longer trip on the train, of course but it will suit a couple in their 20s far more than the boring family suburbs further west.

Thanks Alistair and Nicky.

I think that Oatley or Como would be as far as i would be prepared to travel. There is a bit of a dilemma now between the short travel time to work from somewhere not as desirable versus a longer travel time from somewhere a lot nicer and livelier.

We wouldn't want to be stuck somewhere we dont like and not get a feel for the real Sydney. But then again, how much of the real Sydney would we experience if I spend 3 hours a day commuting to and from work. It really is a tricky one.

The more I think about it I think we will really need to get a car as soon as possible to open up our options. If we were to get a car my considerations would open up to:-

Strathfield
Burwood
Balmain
Leichhardt
Drummoyne
Newtown
Coogee
Clovelly
Randwick

Thankfully there is much more information available on these suburbs, but the over-riding and repeating feature is that they are all very expensive. We have a bit of time yet as we arrive on the 2nd Feb and will be staying in long-stay apartments for a month.

The hunt continues...

I'd probably go for these areas rather than the areas in your first post however I wouldn't be surprised if driving to Campbelltown in rush hour could take more than an hour (Sydney roads are very congested).

Where will the OH be working as if they are in the city/North Ryde this list will also be better to?

Price of rentals generally reflects the popularity of an area. Your second list I would suggest is also probably better for you as it is closer to the CBD and also areas where there is life in the evenings rather than some of the suburbs in your first list which are quite family areas with not much going on outside the home in the evening.
