Can anyone answer a few questions for me please?

Now....

If there is a republic:

Will Aus change its flag?
Will Aus still enter the commonwealth games?
Will Aus loose the old birds birthday holiday?
Will any association/body named "royal" change its name?

If a republic came in......who do you guys reckon would stand best chance of becoming el presidente? (seriously!! ;) I remember the thread on this and NO, Dame Enda is not a likely candidate!!)

Recent polls indicated the current flag is popular although the only alternative is the aborigonal flag.

Membership of the commonwealth is irrelevant. I cannot see Australia leaving the commonwealth.

More than likely. IMO there would be Republic day instead.

Interesting question. I guess it would be up to the organisation. I also would wonder what would become of royal visits to the "Royal" institutions down under.

Get rid of the ties with the monarchy here AND in UK.

Apparentely the guy who runs this website hates British people and sees us as a ''handful of bloody foreigners'' and thinks we dont have a right to vote on Australian matters even if we have Australian citizenship! He thinks its better off if we all get sent back!

Who does run this website anyway?

Mr B (an aussie) wants Australia to remain under old queenie and doesn't want it to become a republic in case it ends up like the US (shudder). He seems to be a big fan of the queen, but I think this is just because he's due to meet her next year. He also reckons it would be unfair for all his relatives who fought and died for queen (well, king) and country in the last few wars if Australia then ditched it's royal roots.

Yes, I realise that OzTennis, but it just got me wondering who ran this site.

I don't suppose anybody really knows (or cares). :)

There's also an organisation to support the Australian National Flag:

'No worries'. I do know that one of Peter or Paul (no Mary?) is a Malaysian living in Singapore. That's why it makes me laugh when you I see the 'you're not British, this site isn't for you, this isn't for Aussies' type arguments. I always think if this were true your moderator and owner (if they are different) has to get off their own site!:D

Actually the Queens Birthday holiday is a state matter rather than federal. In NSW it's in June, while in WA it's in October.

There would most likely be nothing stopping a particular state from keeping the Queens Birthday holiday even if the country went to a republic at federal level. There's also been debate about whether individual states could keep a Governor to represent the Queen at state level if they wished.

A federal referendum needs not only to win the popular vote of all Australians, but also the popular vote in four out of the six states.

Although people in the ACT and NT can vote in referendums (this itself was the subject of a referendum in 1977), the territories do not count towards the 'four state majority' rule.

Australians are quite conservative constutitionally. There have only been eight constitutional amendments carried by referendum since Federation in 1901. Many other proposals (32 in total) have been defeated, including the republic idea in 1999.

Details of these votes going back to 1901 are at http://www.aec.gov.au

Interesting info and link Jeremy. The Queen actually had her real 78th birthday yesterday.

(Referenda? Referendums? as a matter of irrelevance)

Rightly, Oz should be a republic. On this side of the world, we will soon see if UK becomes firmly entrenched in the EU.

Of course, one of the outcomes of Oz becoming a republic and western Europe's crackdown on immigration may mean it will become a lot tougher for Aussies to live and work in the UK.

And it may eventually mean that immigrants to Oz have to choose between Oz and UK citizenship.
