Renting - Pets allowed?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this, so please bear with me. We had our 176 visa granted last week and now we're busy trying to gather as much info as possible to get us ova to Perth. Don't know really where to start, we haven't much time to think or prepare as our application was only submitted in June, but not complaining.
Anyway we've decided to rent a property or several for the first year to find our feet, but we have a dog and the decision on whether he comes along to rests on how easy or difficult it is to rent a property which allows pets.
Can anyone help me out with any info please?
Thanks:

Is it a big dog or a small one? I expect some landlords would be less inclined to let a big dog.
But I think plenty of us rent with pets, I have two cats and it was no particular problem. There was just one or two places that we considered that said no cats, for most it was no problem. So I would sum up in that it is very slightly limiting.

We had two rotties when we we renting (this was in Queensland but I'd imagine it would be similar to most places). Some rentals were listed as no pets and of the others it was down to the landlord's discretion if they accepted them or not.
We applied for two rentals and were offered them both - both requested that the dogs slept outside and that the indoors had to be treated for fleas after we left.
Both rentals were on 'housing estate' type places - more rural places seemed to be a lot more lenient on the whole pet thing.

some state no dogs, some state on application and some state small dogs only. Its like the uk in that sense.
We found a place quite easily and we have a rough collie cross, so mid size dog though we did have some rejections as well. We have just been told that we will be responsible for a full house clean etc on leaving.
Some agents recommend offering slightly more on the weekly rent or bond to cover any damage by the dogs but we didnt need to do that.

We found that in Perth itself it was very hard to find a half decent place that would allow pets. Thats one of the reasons we ended up in Mandurah. Glad it happend. Get a lot more for your money house wise, great beaches and the chance to live the real beach / outdoor lifestyle.

That depends on what pets you are looking to rent.
Something big like a giraffe? . . . then no.

Lots of Aussies have dogs and happily rent property with them. Most landlords will stipulate that dogs are kept outside.
The ease or otherwise of renting with pets will depend on how hot and urban the market is that you are looking at. Also how responsible a pet owner and how this comes over to the agent/landlord.
There are two main fears a landlord will have letting to a dog owner. Firstly that the dog will wreck the house / garden. Secondly that it will be left alone most of the time and cause nuisance to neighbours and thus lots of complaints.
Being honest, its not impossible to rent with a dog, but it doesn't make things easier. If you want urban central, then you will struggle in a hot market, if you want relaxed acreage, then less of an issue. In either case you need to prepare more for renting with a pet.
Good luck

Thanks everyone for your advice, it's given us something to really consider. We have a German Shepherd so he's quite big, but on the plus he's 9yrs old and very well trained.
thanks again
