Post renting in Australia

Hi,

I'm hoping somebody can help me, I am going to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa in January 2013. Does anyone know if i will be able to rent a apartment even if I am not able to get a job straight away? I will be able to put down a up front payment to cover 6 months rent if that helps? I really don't want to get in to shared accommodation unless I really have to.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Sarah

Depends where you are going to be living. But any city a one bed apartment wont be cheap. i.e. $250+ dollars a week easily. You can get a house share from as low as $100 a week.

I am looking at Gold Coast/Brisbane area. I don't mind paying $250-$300 per week. Thank you for your replies.

It might be helpful if you can bring some references from previous landlords.

Generally, six months would be a minimum period lease (so waving six months rent in cash might help). You might also get lucky and find someone who just wants a short term tenant.

Good luck.

The thing is I haven't had a previous landlord as haven't rented before.
Lets just hope the 6 months upfront rent will help
:-) thank you all

Then a character reference from a figure such as a minister or in our case the estate agent who sold our house, to state that we were upright citizens who were financially sound and who had maintained their property well, would help.

Try Gumtree and local ads. You can rent a room/bath/food for less than that. If you want your own place then expect to pay more.
