Might be worth watching out for this legislation change

$22,000 stamp duty on a $400,000 home you don't own.

Hopefully they see the stuff up if it is so? or could it be a stealth tax?

Come on, scaremongering journalism. As if that's going to happen to residential tennants. No chance.

I can't believe this will ever come into force as the primary reason people rent is because they can not afford to buy, so how would the majority of renters come up with these sums?

Scaremongering or not I think people should be aware of it all the same.

Someone somewhere's getting it all wrong. Most tenants rent because they can't afford to buy - the thought of a landlord being able to sell from under him and load the duty onto the tenant is just absurd! It couldn't happen.

The problem is the state revenue office are trying to pass legislation to stop a loop hole at the other end of the market and in doing so are creating a bigger issue elsewhere.

My issue is where is the legal sense check before this stuff is submitted. Its making a mockery of the statutory system ..... so what else is getting through??

"If it is shown that the bill will have unexpected consequences that are not able to be overcome administratively, then we will consider appropriate amendments to the bill when it is debated in Parliament next month."
On some things I think we can trust Politicians.
The opposition should take great delight in making the policy makers look very foolish with this.

Oh bloody hell, stealth taxes over there too. Rudd been listening to Brown? (if so, he's the only politician left on the planet now who is!). Having said that, with the way money over here is being bandied about to help fix the mess, it's got to be clawed back somehow. It really does need people exposing such things so that it stops being stealth. Scaremongering or not, I do think it's important for everyone to know that there is even the slightest hint something being introduced stealthily.
