Default Rental Question: When relatives are visiting for 3 weeks

hi there,

assuming you are renting a 3 bedroom house/unit.

i was just wondering if landlords allow it if your relatives (parents) stay with you whenever they visit from overseas? like if they stay for 3 weeks and you have a spare 3rd bedroom in your rental that you would like them to stay in while they are visiting?

or are they so strict that they will actually cancel your lease?

thanks!

And why exactly would you bother to tell them if its only a couple of weeks??

We had people coming and going but hardly thought it was relevant for either the landlord or the managing agent.

If you start too sublet on a longer term basis then sure but occasional visits is in part of enjoying that property.

Agree with GG, it is not the landlord or agents business if you have visitors, certainly as stated if they move in long term it is a different matter, but a couple of weeks is not anything to do with them.

Providing they are not "living" with you'll be fine. We had relatives visit twice when we lived in Sydney and there was no hassle from the agent and the owners of the house lived 4 houses down the street.

Were now in Perth WA with people coming to stay for a week next month and were not bothering to tell the agent.

It wouldn't matter too much if you did tell us................ all we are really bothered about is :

Your rental payments are made consistently and on time

The rental accommodation is well looked after with allowances being made for fair wear and tear

The neighbours are not likely to put in a complaint about the appearance or upkeep of the property insomuch as it brings the standard of the street down appearance wise.........ie jungle as opposed to lawns, resembling a car wrecker's yard, littered and unkempt gardens

The neighbours are not likely to complain about noise or anti-social behaviour taking place on the premises?

Obviously if said visitors become full-on live-ins and the premises become sort of sub-let.............. then that tends to alter the complexion of the lease agreement and the lease should be adjusted to suit.

Our Landlords have no probs with us having visitors staying, but they did say if they stay for more than a week, they need to know in case there was a fire, and had to do a body count !!!

You'll get fed up with the visitors and wished you'd told them that they have to get their own place to stay.
Just wait and see

Damn, was hoping to tell OH that his mother couldn't come and stay as we would be in breach of our tenancy agreement

our tenancy agreement specifies how many adults can live here, however when we queried guests staying for months (our children are adults) we were told this would be ok
