Renewal of AU PASSPORT from the UK

Hi. What's the easiest and quickest way to renew your Australian passport while residency is in the UK
my current Australian passport expires in September 2025 and I do not bother with a UK passport
Is there any advantages renewing early before my old one expires
Thanks

Re: Renewal of AU PASSPORT from the UK

The only reason to renew would be for identity purposes in the near term as I do not at present intend to travel.
If I let it expire would it complicate matters more than if I renewed prior to expiry
I ask as for identity purposes I could grab a UK passport for 100 pounds but I have thrown my old UK passport away so would it be a renewed UK or new application
To renew my Australian passport while in the UK will cost me circa 550 buck.
I'm tempted to either apply for a or renew the UK passport until I intend to travel to Australia then renew my Australian passport unless this option causes problems

https://uk.embassy.gov.au/lhlh/passp...lcomepage.html is the link you need for getting/renewing an Aus passport in the UK. I can;t find the answer to what happens if you don't renew until after expiry, sorry.
I would suggest that you keep one passport or the other valid, and if you are resident in the UK and not planning a visit to Aus in the near future, the the UK passport would seem to be the better one to have!

If you no longer have your old UK one, then have a read of this - https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passp...igital%20photo

Thanks Poly.

How are you? Still in Brighton.
I miss Australia some days others I never give it a thought.
Went back for an extended reki recently walked past the RG in the Valley thought of you sitting there.
Brisbane seemed different not so shiny. The Irish bar above McDonald’s in Surfer's has closed, used to love that bar. Had a pint in Irish Murphys Guinness $14. Ouch. Got some great memories but without a large pile of dollars it seems out our reach now.

Brisbane certainly isn't as cheap as it was, and has changed a lot since I first went out there in 2003. I remember my tatty local bar in Windsor was charging $13 for Guinness when I left last year, And not the best Guinness either, by a long way! The RGs days were fun, good music, good company, but looking back there were far more tough days than good ones.

I rarely give the place a second thought - only when I hear from a friend there, really. Would definitely never set foot in the country again, never mind Brisbane!
I'm so adjusted to life back here now that I really get caught out when I am forced to deal with Aussie stuff - I was buying a Christmas pressie for a friend's baby this week, it was a proper wake-up call to have Amazon Au charging me a delivery fee, AND most toys are already "will be delivered AFTER Christmas" - seems Aus is still 20 years behind :D

Very happily settled in Brighton thanks, watching the waves and the storms - Darragh has made a real mess of the beach this weekend - and while life is never perfect, I've reached a level of contentment that was never possible in Australia.

Hope things work out for you whichever way you decide to jump. At least you are seeing Brisbane without the rose-tints, and if you do ping back you know what you're going to. I the meantime though, I'd say sort your UK passport, far more use here than the other one - especially as you don't even have an old UK one to show.

We've had to renew current and expired Australian passports and both are equally awkward in requiring an interview and expensive at £250 or so. If you have British nationality, it's £80 or so for the passport, if not it's £1600 or so plus the £80.

You need to go to an actual embassy for the interview. Consulates don't count.

I know I'm having a confused day for non-forum reasons, but can you clarify your post please?! :)

The UK has an Australian High Commission, that is where their passport interviews are held for applicants in the UK. There is no Australian Embassy in the UK.

Not quite sure what you mean by "If you have British nationality, it's £80 or so for the passport, if not it's £1600 or so plus the £80" . The OP is a British citizen, but that fact makes no difference to the cost of an Australian passport.

The High Commission is the embassy (different terminology for historic reasons). There used to also be Consulates, but I see they've all been closed down now, just leaving London and Dublin as the only local passport options.

The OP is a British citizen, but that fact makes no difference to the cost of an Australian passport. Yes, but just clarifying for others reading this. Also kind of disappointing that the UK will charge my OH £1600 for British citizenship, but Australia will only charge me A$330 for Australian.

Different countries set their own charges and have their own rules.
I can see now what you mean by "If you have British nationality, it's £80 or so for the passport, if not it's £1600 or so plus the £80". However, again its not strictly correct and in the world of visas, passports and immigration terminology is important. The " £1600 or so" is not for the passport, its for citizenship and the two should be viewed separately, which is why the charges are set out separately. Not everyone who qualifies for, and applies for, British citizenship goes on to apply for a passport. They are separate entities. And not everyone who wants a British passport qualifies for one, even if they are happy to pay £1600.

Re: Renewal of AU PASSPORT from the UK

I'm dual nationality Australian and UK

It's why I have the option to hold two passports

https://uk.embassy.gov.au/lhlh/PassportsApplyPost.html

$576 Dollars applying from the UK

https://uk.embassy.gov.au/lhlh/PassportFees.html

UK passport is £100 application via the post office

I'll apply for a UK passport if I ever return to Australia I'll enter on my UK passport and apply for an Australian passport while I'm resident in Australia

Thanks Poly

You may have issues with this as Australian citizens must use Oz passport as they cannot hold a visa to enter Oz. Sure you can’t be refused entry but airlines do not have to carry you. They can clarify your status (just having an expired passport doesn’t count) but they are increasingly getting annoyed with too many people doing this and can delay you considerably. Get there early and and ask nicely!
This will soon be the case for the UK too so best to keep both passports valid.

Hi we let our Aussie passport expire whilst back in the UK we had to go down to London (we stayed 2 nights just in case and to also make it worth the trip down) we had to have a verification of who we were off a criteria (we used our dentist’s and yes they were contacted by the Aussie passport office) we had our passport photos taken by a professional as they also have to be taken to a strict criteria and had to take original documents with us as well so a few hoops to jump through, the cost of the passport is quite high but always worth it. Our eldest son his own passport was expiring and he just sent his in the mail and did not have to go to London so I would definitely renew before your passport runs out. Good luck

Our friends have just sold their home(which was built in the early 60’s) in Perth WA and in all honesty it was not a good area at all when we last lived in Perth (we lived in another suburb) but they have just sold it for $800000 !!! they bought it for $119000 in 2002, it sounds scary the house prices now

You can get an emergency passport (a letter) at quite short notice which will get you on a plane and through immigration. Bit cheaper than a proper passport but only works once!

What's short notice and where are you in your journey
A week before boarding or the day of travel.

Reasoning is board with UK passport go through AU customs on visiting visa if questions are asked in Australia you state your passport has expired
I came into the UK on an Australian passport last year as I had no UK passport still here no questions asked
