Can anyone help sway my decision ?

Has anyone had good OR bad experiences with either of these 2 companies recently ?

Thanks in advance
some of the best work i have seen out of the u,k, was by a company called MICHAEL GERSON PTY LTD, We do work for most of the uk companys, remember the job you get will only be as good as the crew doing the job, if they look stressed ,or pushed for time look out . if you feel somethings not right ring the company and ask that they send out a supervisor, DONT CONFRONT THE CREW , last ex pat i spoke to had their job loaded on a friday prior to a bank holiday needless to ,say the results spoke for them selves,...............MM

I used Pickfords once before and found them very professional, moved from uk to portugal, no probs. I was lucky that the hubbys work paid for them but i can honestly say they were all nice, mind you a few cartons of fags and bottles of wine went down a treat and plenty of coffee to keep them going. Using Pickfords again this time....

won't go into details( have posted our feelings about Pickfords on here before) but we had a bad experience with them last year and when we wanted to claim on damaged item(s) in the plural, due to ineffective packaging, poor handling, etc we were told we needed to get repair costs here in Aus and post it to the Uk within thirty days.Try finding specialist furniture repairers and art restorers who will assess, quote and return said quote in thirty days while you work mon-fri full time.Think hard before you book. Also they could only deliver our consignment mon-fri 0800- 1500hrs unless we were willing to pay extra( over $ 150) for a sat am- full time workeres beware. Read the small print!!! cheepest isnt necessarily best.Kate.

The delivery company ,makes about A$1600. [about 400pd]out of the 3-4k you just paid to get your shipment sent over, with this we supply truck and driver to pick up your container from the port ,unload cont, into bond store [3men], custom and quarantine clear, [customs [quarantine now about $125 an hr} when its cleared we reload it. bring it to your house deliver ,unwrap shipping wrap ,unpack if necessary [3men] remove debris/cartons etc, dump at recyclers[another truck and driver,}as you can see chris this do,nt leave much to pay o/t rates for weekend work, you are right with one thing READ THE FINE PRINT, get the forwarder company rep to out line any little items that could cost you more money, ie quarantine charges , for cleaning, of tools lawn mowers etc, cars[about 150bucks now} golf clubs, if they find borers in any furniture, the whole container gets fumigated, [very exspensive] irradiation and heat treatment of any suspect wooden items [bark etc] cheaper to destroy them...............MM

How long does it take to book these people?

Is it worth them coming round a few months in advance?

Ask your agent who,s doing your delivery on the s/s coast , we had a situation years ago on the GOLD COAST ,were my company shut the whole depot ,down , sacked the lot. then reopened afresh the problem we have here in the industry is that the labour in QLD would rather sit on the beach [on the dole ]and surf all day , than lug peoples furniture around for $15 an hr, so make sure they use a reputable company our company on the s/s coast are owner operators , they have a lot to lose if they do,nt get it right.........MM

Hi Tina

Yes its definitely worth it - especially as most people get at least 3 or 4 companies to quote and that takes time. It is 1 less thing you need to rush into doing once youve got your PR. Plus it makes you feel as if your getting organised. Once you speak to these guys it can help you decide what you should and shouldnt take. For example if your stuff adds up to just over a 20 foot container, then you can start think about selling the excess or even going for a 40 foot.

We have some ethnic wood carvings, some quite rough wood, will these be considered 'suspect'.

Wouldn't want to part with them though

should be ok, if they are of african origin, the rough wood must contain no BARK , otherwise will require irradiation or heat treatment, make sure the artefacts have no animal hair on them ,i,ve lost count of how many english rocking horses we have had to remove the tails and manes from, because they are real horse hair. theres a lady in the Adelaide hills who makes a fortune out of restoring them, seedpods must also be removed,if you have any real fears check the AQUIS WEB SIGHT, pays to put these items in one box and mark it OF INTREST TO QUARANTINE, with just abrief discription of whats in there...............MM

we went with Pickfords who asked for $300 when our consignment arrived just incase customs wanted to open any boxes, which they didn't.This fee was never mentioned when we booked them. But then again they never mentioned that they would arrive two hrs late and have b'fast at Mac Donalds first, 'forget' to pack various items, do a shody job, damage items of sentimental value and have a totally unprofessional attitude to the job.I was warned by a colleague who used to own a removal company who were bought out by Pickfords, he only stayed with them a matter of weeks.Said their attitude was once they had the money- not our problem.
Yes, i know that these 'poor' companies dont make much from our business, afterall there isn't that many of us emmigrating is there? but you get what you pay for.Smaller companies have better attitudes, seem to care more and maybe need your hard earned cash more than the larger companies who promise high standards and dont deliver.Beware.

Have nothing but praise for Pickfords in Perth but your end of Australia sounds like they hired tossers.

I posted befoe that I was torn between PSS and Bishops Move.
Very impressed this am to receive a letter from the australian agents for PSS advising the way they work and giving names and contact nos and e-mails. A map of the local area we are moving to and lots of hints with regard to customs and immigration.

This is excellent as I had not confirmed with any of the agents that I would use them I am definitely using PSS now very impressed with their attitude and care.

I was going to use Pickfords, but since they quoted they have not bothered to do a follow up call.

So I just contacted PSS to get a quote, I like the sound of a company with the right attitude.

I only need over wrapping and shipping as I have packed everything myself, only me to blame if anything gets damaged as I will not bother with insurance.
