Reject an 18 year old?
[B]Can DIMIA reject an 18 year old who was on main application aged 17years (but since had a birthday) Would this jepordise our application? We've since found out that the 18 year old isn't dependant on us and doesn't live with us therefore has to apply herself!!

if your application has already gone in isnt that what you will be assessed on and if they were 17 then , isnt it like getting the application in for main applicant before aged 45 Dont know but will be interested in the replies
good luck anyway I know getting our eldest on the visa was the most stressful part of the application process for us
best wishes Mary

Dependency is assessed as of date of *decision* not application, and teenagers who turn 18 during processing are being refused visas all the time because DIMIA say they are no longer dependent on the parents.
Dependency has to be proved to a child aged 18 and above. Although the rules are complex in detail DIMIA like to see full time education, they don't like full time employment, and any kind of relationship (de-facto, marriage, engagement) is a no-no. the last point is relevant for under 18s too.
If confused by the rules - get good professional advice as this is an area that needs the utmost respect.
If it's not possible to include the child in the current application then you need to look at other options including some combination of:
- working holiday visa;
- student visa;
- onshore skilled sponsored after 2 years study (especially if you move to a designated area); and
- remaining relative visa
All these have complex rules and the chances of someone not well versed in visa law working out the optimal solution are close to zero.

We were in that situation but our lad was at college at the time so DIMIA made us get a signed letter from the college stating how long he'd been there etc etc and that was OK. Financially he wasn't dependent on us because he worked when not at college but the fact he was in education still was the green light.

Just read your post. I am applying for PR ia australia.
My 19 yr old daughter is a full-time student at university. What evidence did you have to provide to prove dependancy?
She has a student loan plus bursary which is based on my income.
I would appreciate any advice with this.
She lives with me permanently though stays in student accommodation term-time.
