Registering a newborn as a UK citizen
Has anyone done this whilst based over here (I'm in Sydney)?
I'm just about to do some swotting up on the logistics of it, but thought i'd check if anyone has any good/bad/ugly experiences.

You don't have to register them (in fact you can't in Australia).
You just need to apply for a passport for them.
'Please note that, because of their close links to the UK and documents being issued in English, we can’t register births which occurred in the following countries:
Australia
Canada
New Zealand
Republic of Ireland
South Africa

Re: Registering a newborn as a UK citizen
thanks. might be a silly question, but as they need their own passport, does it seriously have to have a mugshot of a baby in it?
They all look the same! (obvious racial differences aside)

Yes it does.........find a photo shop that will do it. They usually have a bean bag covered in pale fabric so that it looks like the baby is on the required background and avoids the hand/arm in shot......they know the requirement and can take a few to make sure it works. Much easier than trying to faff with a newborn in a booth!!!

You can't do consular birth registration in Australia but in some cases (eg if parents are British by descent or father is not married to the mother) then you have to register child as British with the Home Office. And there is a time limit.
