Default Registering car in QLD without being there.

So.....we found a campervan which suits us, did the RACQ test via freinds ..everything is fine and we would like to go ahead and buy the car.
We will be in Brisbane in may and the seller wants to sell it now. So, how do we manage this. How can we register the car without being in QLD? Just sending signed copies of driving license will work?

Thanks a ton!

Fun Fun Fun.. http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home...otor_vehicles/

As its second hand, it needs a safety cert, third party insurance (maybe ) , Enough ID points, proof of qld address ( that'll be fun ).

Have a look here

But I honestly don't know how you'd do it logistically, unless your friends were to register it in their name . . . might be wrong.

That's the only route I can think of - are your friends able to buy and register it for you?

Nope. Basically you get a drivers ref no in qld which is used for your license, rego, trailer regs etc. You need to provide all the ID to get the ref number, then you just use that.

If you go that route, you'll have to get it transferred again, with all the safety cetificate and other red-tape.

See posts 2 and 3.

Also read here . . . a list of acceptable forms of ID . . .

http://www.support.transport.qld.gov...E/F4362_ES.PDF

And here

http://www.support.transport.qld.gov...E/F3518_es.pdf

As per point six, the vehicle can be registered by someone else, but only if they can provide YOUR necessary ID listed in the pdf above.

You'll then have to pay 2 lots of stamp duty - one lot when it's transferred to your friends and then again when they transfer it to you - ouch!

Don't think you'll be able to do it - my hubby works for Qld Transport and he comes home with lots of stories about how people have terrible trouble getting the right ID together when they live here, let alone from abroad!!

Thanks alot!

But it seems they need all original documnets, meaning my freind would need to take our passport!! man....its almost impossible (
Guess will have to go through registering it twice.

Hmm, they used to accept photocopies, but appears that they don't now. I know I did passport and two credit cards from the UK, but looks like they've tighten up on the rules.

Email or call the qld transport, gov departments are generally very helpful here.

please be aware of the above posters comment on stamp duty. Its not a small amount of cash depending on the purchase value of the vehicle and you will be paying it twice.
